1997 Ford Ranger 4x4 not working

I have a 97 Ford ranger splash. The 4x4 isn't working. I get the blinking 4x4 lights that blink 6 times then after two minutes its blinks again for 6 times, and so on every 2 minutes. I changed the transfer case shift motor and it is still not working. The only thing I noticed is that the new shift motor wiring harness did not have a brown wire to hook back up to that goes inside the transfer case. I need to know if that brown wire needs to be hooked up, or could the issue be something else. The ranger has manual lock in/out hubs.
Thanks for any help.

I think (not 100% sure) that the '97 4WD shift module is the same as on the '93. If that's the case, then you can try the tests set forth in this thread:
