1990 f250 low brake pedal

I have a 1990 f250 and the brakes have got progressively worse since I've owned it. Now the pedal goes all the way to about 1" from the floor. The truck still stops, but only the front brakes work. I know this due to when I'm on ice the rear tires slowly spin while I'm stopped. Could this be the rear drum shoes, and If so how do I check. Thanks

first thing to do is adjust the rear brakes. that may just solve all your problems.

That's hilarious I don't think I've ever seen anyone with their rear brakes that far out of adjustment

You should take video of that then post it

Then try to adjust them I would take the drums off and inspect them first if they're worn pretty good might be time for new rear brakes

Rear drums out of adjustment. The adjusters don't work very well. So much for "self" adjusting. I just get under there every once in a while with a jack and spin them and adjust by hand.

yup, the rear "self adjusters" rarely work the way they were designed to.

My pedal was always low even though I used parking brake frequently and went in reverse to adjust them. Nope. Didn't work lol

I have a 1990 F150 5.8 EFI. I have the same exact issue as the original poster. Guess I will need to take it to the brake shop.

gotta use the parking brake religiously to keep them adjusted, and make sure the adjusters aren't old, crusty, or star wheel worn. also have to make sure the levers are not sticky, crusty, or seized.

its a good idea to have someone engage the parking brake with the wheel off to see if everything is working.

The brakes were bad from the get go then the truck sat for awhile and that's when they got worse it doesn't leak any brake fluid though which confuses me on why only the front brakes work

even if you use the parking brake every day, the slack adjusters suck, and very rarely work the way they were designed to . the only way to keep the rear brakes properly adjusted is to do it manually.

I've always had good stretches of good auto adjust time with fresh and lubed components. But yep, undeniable it doesn't last forever. Good idea to replace the adjusters and lube the arms every time a brake job is tackled.
