1991 Ford F150 Lariat 5.8L 2wd - Need help identifying replacement transmission

My deceased grandfather's 1991 F150 with 60,000 miles on it lost the transmission last year. It has been driven less than 100 miles a year since he passed in 2000 because she rarely uses it only to haul limbs and bags of grass with it to compost once or twice a year. It has no forward or reverse although will occasionally go forward or reverse a few feet if I rev it and put it into gear. I think the pump has failed. She drove it for who knows how long about 4 quarts low on fluid. Anyways, I am looking to source a new transmission for this truck in order to help out my grandmother who uses it occasionally.

Did all of the 1991 F150's in 2wd with the 5.8 come with the E4OD transmission? This truck is a loaded Lariat with the overdrive. It is a single cable long bed truck.

I have found a reasonably priced rebuilt E4OD that has come out of a 1994 F150. Is this transmission compatible with the E4OD in my grandmother's 1991 model? Am I going to run into any difficulties doing the swap? (cables, sensors, etc.)

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. I want to get this truck back on the road for her because I hate to see it sitting and wasting away. It is a really nice old truck.

does the truck have the OD button on the shifter? if it does you have an e4od.
the 94 tranny should work fine if you do have an e4od

1991 MY truck may have the O/D button on the dash.

A 1994 transmission will work, but....The 89-91 E4OD transmissions also have a different shift "arm" than the 92 up ones due to the different steering columns and method used to engage the gears. It is swappable between the two, but is additional work.

Ok perfect. Mine does have the push button OD on the dash. Is the shift arm difficult to swap or is it just a few bolts and brackets under the truck?

Does the 1992 and later have the option to connect the speedometer cable to the transmission? If not can I swap the tailshaft or is the tailshaft not swappable on the 2wd models?

I am not certain swapping tailshafts will work. The trans may need to be disassembled to swap the entire ouput shaft.

Sorry....

Dang. Ok, so the 1989-1991 E4OD's are the ones that should be a direct swap right?

That is probably your best bet. One other thing to consider...the E4OD transmission is completely electronic controlled. Check for codes in the computer before throwing in the towel. Yes, you can have stored codes without an active Check Engine Light.

Warm uo the truck then do this: Fuel Injection Technical Library » 2 Digit Self-test Codes 11-32

Run the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) and stored, aka Continuous Memory, code display.

Or invest in a code reader like the Equus/Innova 3145 for ~$30 USD

Post the codes you got, by number, and when they were displayed.
