All true amigos, very true, and sad to the max, the degree of difficulty in verifying a claim with the VA. My claim is fine now, but still in limbo over any increase over the 30% I have been awarded. Took a long time, and years of denials, for my hearing, which was ruined in a mine explosion (underwater), in Nha Trang.. Long story, we do not need any crying here, I sincerely hope that the VA does better by the vets in the future...

If you don't own any property, for example, you have no problem voting for an increase in property taxes --since it's not going to impact you to have to pay more out of your earnings for a tax increase.
Perhaps there should be four criteria to have the right to vote: First and foremost you must be a (verifiable) U.S. citizen, you must own property, pay a poll tax and lastly, take a civics test. A simple question on the civics test could be, "If the president and the vice president were killed, who would be next in line to take over the presidency?" If a person doesn't know the answer to this, they probably don't need to be voting. (The answer is, The Speaker of the House).

I could not agree more strongly Ultra, and you said it with tact, uncommon sense, and forethought. Well done, and if I ever find that proverbial genie in the bottle, my first wish will be for your 4 criteria to be made mandatory, and retroactive.
People on the Government dole, should not be eligible to vote. I do not mean Social Security, as that is invested money, not actually Government money, nor do I mean VA benefits, as those are earned the hard way. I mean Government assistance, like all the safety net funds, supporting single mom's and welfare families. It was not my choice that they get pregnant, it was THEIR CHOICE, yet, I am paying for it.
It is my choice to live in Baja, and while I pay US taxes, for income earned in the USA, I receive no benefits from paying my taxes. But, that is my choice, and I live with it. I do not ask the Government for any monetary assistance that I did not earn and pay for in advance. I accept that responsibility for my personal choice.

Subsidies: welfare, food stamps, housing, child care, health care, "free" school lunches and any other "free" government programs are something-for-nothing programs on the part of the recipient. --the ones receiving these benefits don't have any vested interests into to them to get them --other than casting votes for people/political affiliations that hand out all the "free" stuff. They are programs provided by politicians to buy votes for them and their political parties.
The "war on poverty" has been going on for 50 years now. Where do we stand on progress for getting this under control and for all the billions (probably trillions) that have been invested on it thus far? --even more in poverty. Evidence suggests this was a bad program and wasteful expenditure of the money. Perhaps the billions/trillions spent would have been better spent putting these people to work instead. But, getting people out of poverty wasn't the objective with this or any other social hand out program. It was to produce more poverty and to get more people to vote for political parties that will keep handing out "free" stuff in exchange for their vote.
Subsidies do not get rid of problems. It only encourages more of the same problems.

All true amigo... SS was started as an involuntary program, but there was a definite amount of money, set aside for the individual, as his own wage earner savings account, never to be put into the general fund.... UNTIL.. LBJ was able to siphon off the dedicated funds, into the public coffers, and spent it quickly.. There is no money set aside for anyone.
Right you are Ultra, and it is a self sustaining system, which keeps thousands employed, giving away wage earner' money, to millions.. Some people do not know, that the government cannot give away anything they did not first take away from the wage earner...

If it's "greedy" for a wage earner to want to keep the money they've actually worked for, I fail to see how it's not greedy for a non-wage earner to want to take the wage earners money. Where does the real greed lie here? The one that doesn't do anything for a living wants the money from the one that does do something.
I understand there are actually people that are disabled or are in dire straights and truely do need help. On the other hand, I see lots of people my age or younger standing around in front of the liquor store (during the day when they should be at work) who don't seem to have any physical impairments (other than maybe being intoxicated and possibly high). It's not that they can't work. It's a matter of they don't want to work --and why would they? They can get checks from the government to do nothing. Everyday is Saturday to them.
If the government actually cracked down on the ones needing the help vs. the fraudulent ones that were just taking advantage of the system, I have no doubt that you would see the amount of handouts being reduced by well more than 75% of recipients.
LBJ's policies of 1964 only made it easier for men not to take responsibilty for getting a woman pregnant. His policies made the children of unwed mothers wards of the state and the state would then become the father to pay for the raising of the child and to take care of the unwed mother. --this, again, was just a strategic political move to buy yet more votes for his political party into the future and for purpetuity.

Interesting that the Democratic Governor of Virginia has granted 200,000 felons the right to vote. Which they lost when they were convicted of a felony.
Hideous' choice for VP a senator and former gov of Virginia.
Your vote does count. I've personally seen 3 instances in NY where a school budget was voted down by one vote, a school merger approved by one vote, and a school merger voted down by 2 votes.
Again, a special thanks for those who have served and are serving our Country.

One vote sure does count! My wife wrote my name in as a canidate for city council. She told me this as we were leaving the voting area. In a couple of days the county auditor called me and wanted to know if I wanted a run-off election against the runner up! Since I didn't want the position anyway, I told them I would concede. If I would have voted for myself, I would have won- by 1 vote. Who knows, I might be in the White House by now, instead of "him".
