Sure you can. The t.case spins the front driveline (like it always does with the t.case in 4WD) but the axles won't drive the wheels. So you can play around with different things spinning and different things connected like tjc suggests.

neat... tried tonight to see if itd let me shift from 2wd to 4wd while moving and still in gear... did let me... so that time i couldnt i must have had the T-case in Neutral.... it seems ill have to agree now that its sure to be the u-joints in the axle... even making a wide turn today i had the wheel jerked from my hands... never had it do that before...

ill be glad when the ice is gone and i can unlock them and leave the t-case in 2wd till i can get it in..

Sounds more and more like a seized U-joint. Don't just look for excessive play. You are looking for a joint that is locking up.

Your truck will probably become un-drivable before the U-joint will snap.

it might... depends on how quick i can get it in... seems like so long as i can leave it in 2wd and hubs free its "happy". lock the hubs and 2wd i get a vibration but sometimes in a turn the wheel jerks which is most likely from that ujoint thats stuck.. going straight i get a vibration in the wheel as well. 4wd with everything locked i get the howling and the kicking in the wheel gets way worse during a turn.. but ironically going straight theres no vibration.

its weird...

nope. cutting torch because it gives a blue flame when properly set.

plasma cutter for universals is overkill.

lol...

i had the front end off the ground today.. left the hubs locked.. put the transfercase in 2wd... spun the tires around with the wheel turned hard over.. at first the ujoints looked fine to me... but when i looked closer i could see the driver side one would kinda jitter a bit like it was binding. but when i went to turn the wheel in reverse i noticed something new... instead of the axle turning immediately it didnt.. when id spin the tire back and forth i started hearing a clunking from those u-joints and watch them jump... pass sides waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse than the driver side... kinda wondering if that play is allowing the 2 axles to get out of sync with each other and also causing a bind in the carrier too...
