EONON GA5173 IN-DASH UNIT FOR F-150

Has anyone installed this Eonon unit in their truck? The listing for this unit http://www.ebay.com/itm/GA5173-7-Android-4-2-2-Pure-Car-DVD-Player-Radio-Stereo-Wifi-E1-for-Ford-F150-/291384170205?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43d7d996dd&vxp=mtr says it's the exact fit for both dash opening and wiring connectors for 2006, 7, 8 and 2009 F150's and expeditions. This unit runs on Android 4.2.2 and does NOT come with GPS software and maps. However it does have a GPS receiver and antenna and says its Wifi enabled and that you can use Google maps or any android GPS app with offline maps as well.
I'm planning on using this along with a OBDLink MX Bluetooth adapter to display some gauges including EGT's for when I haul my 5er. I also want to install 3 cameras that would run through a 4 port RCA switch box for hooking up and backing up. I want to put one camera by the exterior cab cargo light for seeing the hook up to the 5er. One camera by the license plate for non trailer backing, and a 3rd camera on the rear of the RV that would be for spotting the camper. Any suggestions on running 3 RCA cables into/under the cab to up under the dash would be appreciated. I want to use wired runs rather than wireless signals. Thanks

GA5173 in an MKZ

I'm responding 'cause I see you are interested in one of these. I have been in the process of installing one in my 2007 MKZ (OK, I know it's not a truck, but don't tell it that)

I have tried 2 of them, and I've gone from almost no sound with the 1st one (no amplification) to ZERO sound with the 2nd. They sent me a replacement and I just connected it today for testing. As I said, it failed. I am going to do more trouble shooting, but it is really just a PLUG and PLAY with the exception of the ADAPTER needed to use the STOCK Antennae and another one if you want to use the FACTORY GPS. (That one took forever to find, but if you're interested, I can tell you how to get it. It's cheap on eBay, but comes from China)

As far as the unit itself, it's the best fitting of all of the EONON's I have tried. (2 Others were just a tad smaller than the hole in the Dash).

The ANDROID part of this thing is FANTASTIC. It supports GOOGLE NOW, GOOGLE MAPS (forget having to pay to upgrade your NAVIGATION Software) and all kinds of other ANDROIDY things.

But my experience has been no sound. I was hoping to find someone who had installed one and get their experiences.

So if you get one, let me know how it works out.

Hi.
Thanks for the feedback. I did buy one of the GA5173 units and I'm now in the process of sorting out all the connections for cameras(3) and OBD MX adapter, and offline GPS options. I did get an antenna adapter from a local car stereo shop. Once antenna was solidly connected my sound is fine....perhaps your Lincoln has speakers that need more amp than is in this unit?? I had to figure out that not being able to play a DVD or see camera input had to do with an internal software setting on the unit, not the wiring. I'd like to post a detailed install story.....but I don't think I'm allowed to post photos?? Maybe because I'm a newbie. Let me know if there is anything I can look at for you on my unit. My Wifi signal from the house is weak, so I haven't done much with apps yet except for Torque Pro which is fantastic.

Glad to hear you have it working!!!

Phil, Thank you for the feedback as well.

".....perhaps your Lincoln has speakers that need more amp than is in this unit??...."

No Phil, I know the Car and this stereo should work just fine together, I have an EONON M1 that works, but I had to use a PAC AUDIO RP4-FD11 on that one.

What I see not happening, is that this is NOT turning on the FACTORY AMP that my MKZ has. PAC says it's a data signal issue.

What type of system did you have from the FACTORY? Mine is a THX. That may be my issue.

If you had FACTORY NAV, you can use this item to adapt the original GPS Receiver to the EONON: "Fakra SMB D 4004 male plug to SMA male 6" RG174 pigtail cable GSM antenna"

It took FOREVER to figure that out, but I have one ordered from eBay now.

My BU Camera WORKS GREAT! The ANDROID PART IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, Like having a TABLET IN YOUR DASH -

Just no sound. I know it's there, I just can't get it out to the Speakers.

Yes, I'm with you on this, I CAN'T WAIT to get TORQUE PRO working!

Hi.
My factory unit was a plain AM FM CD unit....no nav or screen of any kind. The Eonon unit has a separate wire bundle for a sub woofer that is not connected to anything in my installation(maybe some external amp connection there?). I tried something which works for me on the BU camera(s). I used a 3 male RCA Y cable and connected the one input video cable to BOTH the cam in and video in connections. That way the camera will stay on whether I'm in reverse or any other gearshift position so long as I 1) have power to the cameras which I supply separately via an upfitter switch and 2) have the Eonon on Video in. It will still try to show the rear anytime I shift to reverse Eonon powered on or not.

Just what I needed to know....

Phil, Thanks again. I had powered my Back Up camera with a tap off of the REVERSE LIGHT at one time. The GA5173 in my MKZ picked up on when to turn on the Camera all by itself. That lead goes nowhere when it's installed.

What you told me about the "Plain Vanillia" Ford unit is just what I needed to know. I've been in touch with Tech Support at PAC Audio and the tech there said Eonon's Cam Bus Adapter probably doesn't know how to talk to the THX Amp.

My next step in this process will be to get their RP4-FD11 (as he suggested) in the mix and see if that'll work. (I'm sure it will)

Again, THANX for the INPUT, you've been most helpful.

Actually, I stand corrected on the FACTORY GPS to EONON Cable Adapter.

I received the one I mentioned above, a version "D", but I needed an "F". That being said, I neutered the one I got into a "Z", that is, I removed the two GUIDE KEYS and just used the LATCH to hold it together. A "Z" will work just fine, but if you need one, you can get "Universal Fakra Plug "Z" to SMA Plug pigtail Cable" on eBay. I just didn't see it as anything I needed to wait for, not to mention, I can't find an "F" anywhere.

The THX System is making me do some rather extensive RE-ENGINEERING around the built in connectors of the GA5173 and a PAC RP4-FD11 adapter. I'll post the results when I'm done.

I have been looking at these (the wince versions) for my 2008 350,, There are about 100 sellers (Ebay and Ali), and about 5-8 different software versions.
Problem is they come direct from China, no English speaking support. when I send a basic question to the seller I get a "stereotypical" Asian response, "No Worries, we #1 seller, these #1 units" But I asked if the media player will can sort by artist ???
I really wanted to buy one, but after a week have no idea if the media player will do wht I want?

Alternatives to their Media Player

Here's the deal, it's an ANDROID 4.2 Tablet, with a Radio. That being said, there's ANY NUMBER of APPS out in the Google Play store that can do what you are looking for. I take it you already have your Music in a Digital Format, Right?

Android is much better for this App

Win CE is NOT flexible in this regard. With this little ANDROID Radio, you have all the benefits of ANDROID and an AUTOMATICALLY UPDATED GOOGLE MAP! - Even though it comes from the Great Land of the COMMIES, it works pretty darn good for the Mapping. I have yet to load music into mine, 'cause I'm still getting the interface to work with this blasted FANCY Lincoln THX Stereo. For the "REGULAR" Ford Stereo, it's just a PLUG & PLAY. It really looks nice and fits nice as well.

Question, If I have common sense, does that make me a Communist? - OR - If I use social media, am I a socialist?

I guess I wanted the wince over android because the function was more solid, less flexible but more solid.
I did not want to tinker and fiddle after installing.
The CE units are all firmware and the diff function all work together.

If I loaded a 3rd party music player on the android, would it lower the volume when a GPS voice direction was given, would it mute the player when a phone call came in, then put it back up when?

I was told the android units are more flexible, but less "seamless" between functions.
Whats your experience with that aspect ?

thanks for your input.

In answer to your questions:

"would it lower the volume when a GPS voice direction was given"

It's been my experience that it more or less talks over the music (I have only been using Iheart Radio and the Regular Radio) You can hear it, but it's not exactly a SYNC Experience.

AND -

"would it mute the player when a phone call came in, then put it back up when?"

The RADIO Sound DOES GO AWAY when you get a call, then the VOICE OUTPUT is re-directed for the PHONE CALL, once that's over, the Output goes back to the Stereo Unit.

A side note, I've worked in the Telephone Biz for MANY YEARS, and so have some of my buddies. That being said, my most CRITICAL Telco Friend says this is the best sounding of all the Speaker Phones I have used in my car(s).

Hello I recently installed this unit and the only problem I seem to have is that when I turn the ignition off, the radio stays on. To fix this I removed the CAN BUS decoder; now when I shut the engine off the unit turns off right away; and not when I open my doors like it used to My question is:
1.)has this happened to anyone else?
2.) could this be a faulty CAN BUS decoder
3.) What exactly does a can bus decoder do?

Any help would be much appreciated

CAN BUS DECODER

The CAN BUS is the built in NETWORK of the Vehicle. Yes, it has it's own COMPUTER NETWORK.

I had to do some extra engineering to get the thing working in my Lincoln MKZ, but as I recall, before I did the extra stuff, it turned off just fine after I opened the door with the ignition off. (The extra stuff was required 'to cause my radio isn't a plain vanilla one, it's a THX)

The CAN BUS is the see all and know all of the vehicle. It knew, for instance, when I put my car in reverse, so it turned on the BACKUP Camera and put the output to the screen. (I had NOT connected anything but the Video input from the camera, no power, yet it worked)

So, I would guess that you may not have quite connected everything tightly. I got bit by that once, even though it looks totally fool proof. But I think you really need the CAN BUS DECODER.

What model of vehicle do you have?
