Lots of play in my steering wheel 96 F250

I have a 96 gas F250 4x4. I think my steering box is messed up because it is hard to drive on the road. As in I am constantly going from the right to left to stay on the road. There is no vibration while driving, I have had this truck up to 70 mph and no vibration. Is this an easy fix or do I need to take it to a trusted mechanic?

depends on what is wrong with it. could be a bad steering box, bad tie rod ends, or a few other things. steering box in not that hard to change, just a heavy chunk to get up in there and bolt in place by yourself.

Bad tire can cause this. Do you have a lot of play in steering?

If the sector shaft over center adjustment has been set too tight (common rookie goof) the sector shaft will bind up. Since the steering wheel flexes a spring going into the box this spring unloads when the sector shaft unbinds making it steer further than you wanted and then the sector shaft binds up again.

The reason there is a torsion spring in the box is to control the power steering pressure flow. As the spring flexes it progressively routes hydraulic assist pressure.

Not sure this is what is going on, but it might be. The adjustment is a jam nut and a stud on the top of the steering box.

I have seen the shaft from the column to the box develop significant play in the slip section on 92-96/7 trucks, check it along with all the other components previously mentioned.
