97 psd van blowing fuse

A friend of a friend broke down in his 97 psd van and called and asked
if I could look at it. The wts light wouldnt come on. I found a 30 amp maxi fuse blown.
Replaced it and the wits light came on and it started up, ran for ten seconds then blew the fuse and shut off. He had a manual that gave some of the things on the fuse but I dontbremember exactly what it said or which letter fuse it was. It was under the master cylinder, the second fuse back from the front on the pass side of the fuse box. It was cold and windy so he said he would just have it towed to his regular mechanic. They told him it had too small of a fuse, put a 60a in and sent him on his way. (Yes, double oem!) My WAG is the fuel heater but I couldn't get to it to unhook it. That's all the info I have but I'm thinking someone here might know what is blowing the fuse.

I would say you are correct on the fuel heater. I'm not famular with eh E series, but on the F series fuse #22 powers the heater and the ECM. I don't remember for sure, but I think 30 amp is the correct fuse for that position. I know the color of the correct fuse is green.

Yep green is 30 amp. I assume you can just unplug the heater?
The guy puts additives in every time he fills it up.

Your friend should stay as far away from that "mechanic" as possible. Installing a higher rated fuse just to keep it from blowing is an invitation to an electrical fire. That mechanic is a menace. You and your friend will be able to find out what's on that circuit and fix it right.

Unfortunately not to many van folks on this forum. You really have to go back and identify the fuse, and go from there. The vans and trucks are quite different electrically, even though they share (most of) the engine. The FSMs aren't even the same.

Yes you can unplug the fuel heater, as it is not really needed. If you can't unplug it from the outside of the bowl, I have unpluged it on the inside of the bowl.

Unplug fuel bowl heater.

It's a dead short when it malfunctions.
