need 460 towing performance upgrade ideas

i have a 94 f350 duelly that i use to tow a goose neck rig on weekends. the heads are coming off this winter [needs a valve job only have 82k on motor but almost all towing miles] so with that in mind what can be done to improve performance without spending to much. i want to try to stay under 1500 for parts. i'm afraid if i make too much power the E4OD will need rebuilt [again]

Port and polish the heads and intake to make it breath and exhale better. Headers are always a good but expensive route.

Haha, he said under $1500.00

If it was me I would be looking into some lower gears, if you want to see if a regear is in your future try some shorter tires.

I also like the idea of nice shiny new parts

This should be a sticky it comes up so often.

Free:
Timing set to 12-14*
Remove intake restricter (there is some debate on this)

Cheap:
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator (set to aprox 45-47 PSI @ idle)
new plugs/wires/cap/rotor

$:
Free flowing exhaust, ex. Magnaflow cat and muffler
Electric fan

$$:
Headers

$$$:
Cam, intake and heads

$$$$:
Stroker
Supercharger

Some searching here will help

Remember, pre power stroke the 460 was the goto tow engine. It's got more HP and TQ than the IDI.

The exhaust side of the head is where the biggest gains are. Open them up to 1.76 or 1.80 and do a good multi angle valve job.

If I remember right, in the Project MPG magazine article (forget which mag), the intake restrictor being cut didn't have a positive effect until lots of other mods were done. That by itself didn't do anything.

I believe its the BBK-1707 model. Made for Mustangs I think, but it works with our engine.

I have 160k on the 460 in my f350 with a ZF5 speed

It has the Banks Power Pack on it and the rest is stock. the most I have pulled with it is 9k and it did it with ease.

I would suggest adding a set of headers, and a good 3 inch single exhaust. Then couple that with some work on the heads and you should be set.

Yeah, that's why I said there was some debate about it. It didn't seem to hurt anything on my truck but who knows. It is a tiny couple of holes for a 7.5L

The biggest change in seat of the pants to me was a well designed 3" exhaust with Magnaflow cat and muffler. I have it turned out in front of the rear tire.

Timing was next best feel.

I love how the K&N snake oil people said that the hot underhood air was not a problem LOL
Classic read that I have read many times. Glad the magazine folks went back to the stock airbox, there is nothing wrong with it.

Awesome you mention this!!

So When I first got my ford I had one of my Techs at work put a steering box in it, while I worked on the wiring issues. well he removed the snorkel from the air box to the front of the truck. And I do have a cleanable air filter (Whatever brand Banks uses) Well when he was done he never reinstalled the snorkel, and it for some reason got put in a parts room.

Well last weekend I pulled the truck into the shop and was checking fluids and noticed the snorkel was gone. Found the snorkel and reinstalled. the next day I put 734 miles on it heading up about an hour north of seattle. The truck picked up .5 MPG as compared to the last trip I took down to California. which is pretty good seeing that the seattle trip had twice the traffic jams and my Average speed was higher. I am interested to see the MPG average after my next trip to Sacramento so I have similar driving conditions to compare

Just my first hand experience with keeping the Intake Air Temp down.
