cat converter failing at 39k miles?

Recently my 2011 f250 sd 6.2s check engine light came on so I took it to my local dealer it was throwing a p0430 code, they said bank 2 cat converter wasn't do it's job so it needed to be replaced. I am concerned that there is an underlying cause of the premature cat fail. I pushed the issue with the service manager and he told me that's all they could do was replace the cat and refused to check anything else on the truck. Is this common? Anybody have any input on what else the issue could be? The truck runs and drives fine. I'm just concerned that they are just throwing parts at it to get it out the door.

At least the emissions warranty covers that.

One of two causes come to mind. First, maybe the cat was bad in the first place. It just took 39k miles to show up. Otherwise, the cat may have burned itself out if you have a misfire on that bank. The cat would try to burn the raw fuel coming in, and eventually just wear itself out.

So, if the truck is running OK, I would call it a defective cat from the start and not worry about it.

This may not help because of how long ago it was, but I had a 1990 F250 W/460 that the cat plugged up on. Turns out it was a bad Oxygen sensor. Good luck.

I'm confident that your dealership is going to take great care of you, chrislambing. If you need me to step in and assist after the repair, just send a PM my way and I'll do what I can to help.

Good news, got my truck back from the dealer today. They had to replace both cats bc its all one assembly. They also said that the cats weren't clogged or broken they simply weren't sufficiently filtering the exhaust, so they were just defective from the factory. I also told them to do the works oil change on it while it was in. When I went in to pick it up I noticed it hadn't had an oil change. The service writer said they forgot to do it and that it would be an hour wait. The service manger came in and gave me the keys and said the works package was on them bc they forgot to do it and they had the truck for two days. I was shocked that a dealership that never gives ANYTHING away for free did the works for free. I was actually very pleased with the service I received!

That's the kind of experience that I love to hear about, Chris; thanks for sharing your results with us! If you'd like me to document your feedback about this experience, just send a PM my way with your full name, best daytime phone number, dealership info, and any details you'd like me to include.

I've got a 2013 5.0L Super Crew 5.5' Bed,2 W D with 138 K miles. Long story short had DTC PO420-PO430 check engine light on and I cleared code light out on and off since 2018 when DTCPO420 first noticed. Ford Cats, as told to me by Ford dealership service advisor, are on National Back order. I eventually had Magna Flow Converters installed as OK'd by Ford dealership Advisor. Now since then had in 2 different time periods truck in dealership for DTC PO420. First time they stated possible cause gas wit high sulfur content partially stopping up converter. Started using Amoco/BP 87/89 oct . After over aprox 1K gal of Amoco/BP gas DTC still eng light comes on with DTC PO420/PO430. Now had my F-150 in same Ford dealership since 3/6/2023 and with sketchy status reports thanks to Ford Customer Support' getting involved and 3 months later I've heard No solution so far!???

I must close and leave internet for a while. E-mail speadtrap@bellsouth.net if desire comments or suggestion as to what i might do.

Had a RAM which went thru several cats. Never identified the root cause of cat failure, but eventually went with a spark plug anti-fouler in front of the cat condition monitoring O2 sensor. Drove it for years like that before selling it with 348,000 miles, subsequent owner has been driving it for years with no CEL issues.
