correct. I have a permanent wire grounded to my firewall that I use for the tests. a ground from the battery is best, im just too lazy to change it. key must be on.

The problem is you have the pump running backwards.
The orange wire is a ground wire and not power to the pump as you have it.
What you are calling a black wire with a white stripe as a ground wire is a brown wire with a white stripe and that is the power to the pump.
