HELP ASAP. Truck won't start intermittently. Need info

I am on the job site for another 4-6 hours, and I went into point truck to get warmed up from all the wind and cold and my truck wouldn't start.
I just bought the truck probably three weeks ago and this has happened two times before. The truck runs great and what happens is I will shut it off and it won't start but if I wait a little while, it will eventually start. I took the plug off the ICP and it is really oily.

Ford dealership near me has an ICP for $200 and the blue CPS for $28.
I am definitely getting the CPS but I was wondering if The ICP had anything to do with it not starting.

What else could be causing this not to start intermittently.

2 things of note and an imp. ?

First does ur glow plug light come on when cool ? NO ! Next
check secondary battery connection
if ok check primary battery and charge levels . Rmbr when jumping
a diesel the proper way is disconnect the batteries from each other then charge And reconnect.
Reason for 2 batteries is HIGH TORQUE STARTERS .
Still no good ?
Check starter connections.

Been through same description u gave. Firstly secondary battery connection was intermittent
Got it running n got home .
same thing no start no glow plug light.
So problem 2 was starter connections .
No problems last 8,000 miles
1 ton duelly
Hope that helps !
Ps converting from stock side post to
true extended copper side posts available at advance or auto zone or other sources is WORTH IT !!!

Will it run with the ICP connector unplugged? I believe that this will send a default signal to the PCM so that it will at least run if that is the problem.

It will not run with the ICP sensor unplugged.
Batteries are new cables are cleaned terminals are cleaned the starter is new it cranks over really well. I just put in the new CPS and it doesn't start.
Glow plug light functions properly and I am getting power on the correct side of the glow plug relay as well.

Doesn't crank or doesn't start?

Oil level?

Can you hear the fuel pump?

I'd ask about the tach while cranking, but I don't know the year.

42-pin bolt and IPR nut snug?

Fuel level? (gotta ask)

Sorry for the delay. Gotta work.

Truck is an early 03 with the 7.3 psd.
Truck cranks but won't start.
Oil level is good (don't know how old it is, I just purchased the truck, but have all the stuff for a fresh oil change this weekend)
Tach doesn't function when cranking, but works fine when it runs. (Isn't that an 03 thing anyway)
Dark now but I'll check the harness and the ipr nut in a few minutes.

Ok.... I banged on the ipr and the truck started.
Is this part able to be removed and cleaned and it will work correctly, or does it need to be replaced.

The icp sensor has oil in the electrical plug, I'm guessing that needs to be replaced soon.

For the IPR you can get a rebuild kit from Riffraff for @ $20. Much cheaper than a new IPR if you want to give that a try. Blow out the oil from the ICP connector before the ride home....

Safe travels!

Been a while Rich... How have you been?
Are you talking about this for a rebuild?
IPR Complete Re-Seal kit - Riffraff Diesel Performance

A new ipr from riffraff is 185. It's the wait time, not the cost, that is tough. I use my truck for work and can't be down.

Not to bad, looking forward to spring that's for sure! How about you? (besides this crappy day you are having).......

Yep, that is the kit I was refering to. I've never done it that way. But in your situation it sounds like you need to pick one up locally.

I made it home. Seems like once the truck is running it stays running.
One thing I noticed is that cold startup, it has whiteish gray smoke, smells like a poorly running oil furnace. No oil smell, no coolant smell, and once it warms up for 5 minutes, perfect. No smell and no smoke. (Straight pipe and no muffler)

My day has gone well other than that little part of my truck not running. It's great that I have some of the best psd minds reading this forum to help out when someone is in need of info. I really wish I could meet you guys in person. Once I get my toy truck down here in pa from it's storage spot in Maine, I'll be asking questions again. I need to bite the bullet on injectors here shortly after I'm back working on my other truck.

Sorry for no update.
So with oil in the ips connector, I replaced it. For the price of a new ford cps, I replaced it.
Still had the intermittent issue. So I bought an ipr (after taking the old one apart and failed at rebuilding it) and put that on... Fixed.

The ipr was the reason for not startng, and my smokey starting.

Glad to see you are back up and running, I was so hoping that the ipr was my issue too. For the icp make sure that connector is clean too, you can find the pig tail (OEM) at your choice of vender if it needs replacing. If you are still tracking my thread it's going to be awhile before I get back at it due to being in class for two weeks.
