2001 king ranch with 5.4l will not start
I have tried fuel pump reset switch, spraying ether into the air cleaner, and hitting bottom of fuel tank all to no avail. The theft light turns off like it is supposed to when key is turned on. I do not hear the fuel pump sound like I do in my 1994 f150, but it should still fire on the ether even if the fuel pump was bad I would think. I hear a noise under the hood after turning on the key but not trying to start and after trying to start that sounds like a single thud. I cannot explain it any other way unless maybe it sounds like a small muffled explosion. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the pickup is sitting in garage and ran fine when we put it in there.

You tried but it's not enough.
Now you need to check fuel pressure with a gauge by cycling the key to run several times to be sure about the fuel supply.
If it's the PATS system you need to prove that.
Turn the ignition on and wait about 1 minute or until the Theft light flashes a two digit code. If no code, there is something else going on.
You need to check these areas until a lead come about pointing to the problem.
It might even be a relay or fuse seating issue but a lead needs to be found.
Good luck.

I will check the check engine light as I really did not notice what it was doing. Also, I will check the valve for fuel pressure. This pickup has been sitting for a few months due to a dead battery. I replaced it and it has not started since. Thanks for the help so far and will update this weekend.

No fuel rail pressure so I am thinking it is the fuel pump. Do these go out just sitting there if the truck is not run for say six months? Will have to make sure it is run more frequently in the future. Have a rhinolining so looks like I will have to drop the tank which of course is full! Any advise in doing this as apparently you cannot siphon the gas out due to a screen at end of fill hose. Thanks form the help so far!

you will need to locate the fuel pump inertia or cut off switch which should be near the passenger side kick panel and it should be a black box with 2 wires running to and from it with something like a push button. now get a volt meter and test light one or the other but both would be helpful and use a sewing needle and probe the back of the connector either wire and crank the engine both wires should have battery positive when cranking or 11 plus volts. if you use a test light you should see a steady glow koeo and koec. this will tell you if the pcm is commanding the pump to run and if the cut out is letting voltage pass. let us know if you have trouble finding the inertia switch. just out of curiosity have you checked for spark.
