electric pump on carbbed van

I was wondering if its normal for a 83 carbed 460 van that has electric pumps in tanks, to have the pump run constantly when ignition is on?

I'm going to take wild guess and say yes, the fuel system is most likely designed to maintain a set fuel pressure at the regulator then bypass excess remaining fuel back to the tank, if the pump stopped running fuel pressure would drop and fuel starvation would result. An electronic fuel pump that is mounted in the tank is liquid cooled by the fuel in the tank so it is imperative that you keep both tanks very close to 1/4 full..

No it is not. Sounds like the oil pressure switch has been bypassed.
Could also be a relay stuck closed.

Also you do not have a fuel pressure regulator.

A wiring diagram of your fuel system:

ya, i dont see a return line, it goes for hard line to soft line on engine to regulator to filter to carb. is there a return bypass built into the pump in the fuel tank itself you think?

The fuel system should be like the diagram below:

looks like that part might have been undone then the rubber hose put over the end. wonder if this will cause the pump to burn up. it runs real good.

The fuel system does not look stock at all.
I have no idea how they wired or routed the fuel lines so it very hard to help someone with all of the changes that have been made.
I only know the Ford stock fuel systems from the factory. Sorry I can not help you more.
