Terrible knocking sound at idle, goes away when RPMs increase.
2007 5.4 3V. Today I experienced a terrible knocking sound when the truck was idling in gear. This noise would go away when the RPMs increase. It then came back every few minutes and would go away with an increase in RPMs every time.
I will start with oil pressure at warm idle, but wondering if this noise seems excessive or is this the normal "knocking" this valve train makes when the VCT is not working correctly.
Codes P0022 and P0305.
Video of noise:

Any thoughts appreciated.

P0022 Is Crankshaft position timing over-retarded on bank 2 which is drivers side.
p0305 is misfire on cylinder number 5 which is on bank 2.
Passenger side front to back: 1 2 3 4
Driver side front to back : 5 6 7 8
Might want to pull the coil pack on cylinder 5 and make sure its clean, working properly. Cylinder 5 is on drivers side closest to the front of your truck, should be fairly easy to get to. 7mm bolt holds it down. twist the coil pack, pull it out, inspect it.
Sounds horrible on the video. but i had a misfire on 2 cylinders and it sounded just as bad. hope this helps!

Update
It's been a few months since I posted this so thought I would give an update for anyone who comes across this topic. I am still not really sure what might have caused this issue, but since then I have had some significant repairs done to my 2008 F150 5.4L 3V.
Repairs done - since the motor was opened up to replace exhaust manifold I took advantage of it and replaced a lot of stuff
Replaced
Right and Left Exhaust Manifold - passenger side bolts were broken flush so replaced both sides
Water pump
all new spark plugs (they were original)
Machined cylinder heads - since I had the heads off
Right and left cam phasers
VVT solenoids
Timing chain tensioner, both sides
Since these repairs I have taken the truck, while towing on a 1500 mile round trip through mountains and did not experience any more knocking. Its hard to say, but it could have been the cam phasers or possibly even the water pump. I wrote another post on the performance of the truck towing the 6800 lbs in case anyone was interested.
Cheers

haha! I just realized I replied to the wrong thread. I posted something g similar to this with my own truck a few months ago. Sorry, I will have to edit this for the correct post! I have a 2008 5.4 3V, and have only had it a year.
