Is this the same truck that you just bought from this thread?

If so, looks like you have more work than you originally thought. I am interested to see if this was the transmission or the differential and how much fluid was in each of them.

Sounds like the diff went south. Where are you located?

If you pull the rear shaft and jack the axle, does it rotate?

What happened burns3006? I would think the insurance should cover the air bags if its not trans related. That's if you have full coverage.

Turns out the shaft split inside the tranny. There was a weak point in the craftsmanship itself. i did make contact with my nearest ford dealer and they are looking to into giving my compensation for the damage and "traumatic" even lol. as far as the air bag deploying it still remains a mystery. the was no engine code thrown and not a scratch anywhere on the truck. so no collision happened.

Just a quick note on airbags. Dont know about your state, but in Utah if you are driving a motor vehicle originally equipped with airbags, they must be in a functioning state or the vehicle is not allowed to be on the roadway. It will be impounded. Most states have similar traffic laws.

Just a gee wiz....

I'm sure thats how it is with most states. but im still waiting on a return call from the dealership to get a conformation on what will be repaired for free of cost.

I am very surprised that Ford is even talking to you? I fig with a 99 truck they would tell you to take a hike buddy out of warranty !

i figured the same but after showing them a shop bill w/ towing costs and having proof of manufacturers fault. they settled at having if fixed by the dealership for free due to the fact that the zf6 would still be running perfectly had it not been for the week spot in the metal in the shaft. i also had all the receipts and invoices from every regular maintenance. it had an oil change every 9,000 miles, radiator and tranny flush every 30,000 miles, even regular rear end fluid flushing and brake flushing proof. with all these and some other facts they said there should have been no reason for a major failure of a shaft at highway speeds. So i have all $4k back in my pocket and my truck back up and running beautifully. quite satisfied with how FoMoCO handled this one!!
