Another Cummins Swap...

And by "another" I mean on this site and in the truck. It currently has a 4bt, ZF 5spd and 1356 xcase that was installed 8 years ago. Its been a great little engine, great mileage, always dependable, light local towing locally no problem. However, got some towing coming up in the mountains for vacation and hunting so gonna shoehorn a 6bt and 6spd between the framerails. I already have the engine sourced from a school bus, 1996 190 hp CPL 1551. Still trying to find the trans, Fuller, Ford, Dodge, whichever I find first, (affordable, I dont have a money tree), is going in. Gonna be a slow moving thread for awhile since Im still gathering parts and this is my DD so I will need all my parts in a pile on hand before starting. The plan is to be complete by the end of April. We all know what happens to plans tho. Thankfully there are some EXCELLENT builds on here that aren't copyrighted so I can copy and steal to save some time hopefully.

On the subject of parts, Ive been doing searching and such for "Cummins" brand parts and its a jungle out there. I live a 100 miles from any major city so I can't run down the street to local dealer. Any suggestions for mail order "Cummins" brand parts? I will overhauling my engine first since its been stored for about two years.
Thanks, Carl

Prices are slightly higher then an actual cummins dealer but puredieselpower.com has been a reliable source for me in the past.

Im starting to see why these builds take so long...life gets in the way. The list would be too long to type here of the things that come up to prevent me from having fun with my engine/truck. Oh well. Finally got to do a little today. Disassembled my engine, all looked well, great actually. If I had X-ray vision I would have just stuck it in the truck and run it another 160k. I knew it ran great when I pulled it but its been stored for 2 yrs and I was worried about the rings not being exercised and collapsing. All rings were good, piston squirts are good, There was some very minor wear on the top of three rod bearings, and barely detectable wear on the front cam bearing. All cam journals and lobes are pristine, lifter bases without a mark. All rod and main journals look new. Front and rear crank seal areas are good. The crank is still laying in the block so when I get it out, hopefully tomorrow, I can inspect the sprayers. Gotta get some parts ordered!

If you're going to be doing a lot of towing but still want highway gears, you should look into the 6+1 spicer overdrive tranny and run 3.54's. Nice low gears in the tranny, close spacing, and still have a nice overdrive - worth a thought.

What are you doing with the 4BT, tranny, and t-case? I might be interested...

Did you make that engine stand using a D60 rear axle with a sprocket/gear welded to it to be able to rotate it utilizing the hand crank?

If so....freakin awesome.

So.....with a 4bt and zf5 in a dentside CC 4x4 truck - what was your avg fuel economy, best highway fuel economy, and just to be clear, you are correcting for speedo/odo error....?

GOt any pics of the truck?

I would love to have a Spicer 6+1 or fuller fso6406/8406. Theres just not an affordable source around here that I can find. I have feelers plugged into fleabay but the same story there.

Complete 4bt/trans/xcase will be sold when the swap is complete, my nephew has been after me for two years so he gets first choice. If he doesn't want anymore then it will be open to the public, there are several individuals local that are jumping up n down for it, (known good running setup). I will keep all informed.

Wow, you came by your name honestly. Yes, that is an engine stand fabricated around a D60 hub/spindle. I wasn't going to trust my engine to some POS china made junk so I made one to handle all I could throw at it. Worm gear setup is from HF 2k hand winch, I need to do a little more shimming to take slack out of it but it works good. Very stable. I may do a build thread on it if there is enough interest, in between engine stuff.

Avg MPG around 24. Hwy around 26. Best was 27.5. This was couple years ago, my odometer slips now so impossible to figure. New injectors last spring, calendar days between fillips is longer now so prob doing a little better. I do drive for economy so the average JOE probably get a couple or so less MPG.

I think I have a pic or two somewhere, will post later. Its not pretty right now, awful purple paint. One more child out of school then I can complete body/paint.

Thanks again co425 for the headsup about puredieselpower.com. Very helpful folks, ordered a bunch of goodies to get my engine up and running.
