Ok guys I got a 89 f350 crewcab and it has the 351w and a 3 speed auto trans. What are my options for transmissions to get more than just 3 gears. Also the brake pedal is really soft and don't start stopping the truck till its on the floor. I can't find any leaks and the master cylinder is full. Any ideas
Brakes need bleeded.. sounds like there's to much air in the lines... and for the tranny u will obviously need a new tranny and any small bolt pattern ford transmission will bolt to yours. I'm not 100% sure on this but I know the 302 and 351 bolt patterns are the same.
I have a c6(3 speed) which I really like... it all depends on what you want.. like to shift? Get a standard. Like automatic? Get an automatic. when I put this transmission in my truck I wanted to shift and the c6 can be shifted so I just put a Hurst shifter in it and now I love it. I believe u have a c6 so if you went to a standard tranny you would need to put in a clutch and all that
Your options are the computer controlled E4OD or the ZF 5-speed manual, the AOD would bolt up but it is a light duty trans that was never factory installed behind anything bigger than a 5.0 in an F150 so it's life expectancy wouldn't be great in a 7000lb rolling bungalow.
The E4OD does have overdrive. (Electronic 4-speed Over Drive)
I don't know what all electrically you'd need to put one in, but I know you'd need at least a PCM for it, or an aftermarket trans controller...
Thanks for ur help Steve. What years will bolt up. And will it be a direct swap.
Not sure how they bolt on the crossmember but any should bolt up? I think? I would look for one anywhere from a 1980-96 cause I believe nothing changed bolt pattern wise
Thanks everybody I guess I'll be looking for an E4OD. I just have to do some digging and see what all I'll have to get to make the swap work
Trying to piece meal this together is going to be a project. A complete donor vehicle would help. As noted above the E4OD transmission is 100% electronic controlled therefore you need wiring and suitable factory computer (PCM) or an aftermarket controller such as Baumann. Get ready for sticker shock.
It would take a lot of miles to recoup any payback in potential increased MPGs.
