2011 Edge Sport Tire size increase
Hello,
Considering running larger (285/40 r22) instead of the factory (265/40 r22) that came with the Edge. The are about 1.3% bigger. I believe the wheel well will accommodate the larger tire. Same factory rims.
Anyone have any experience or care to comment before I commit to new tires?
Thanks,
Gerrit

Per my spreadsheet you're about 2% larger with the new tire. Looks like about 3/4" diameter and width increase, so if you have a half inch clearance at all points including lock to lock, you would prolly be OK. The outside corner of the tire will be both 1/2" wider and taller, so that might be the most likely point of interference.
I know that some tire dealers will test mount one of the front tires and check it out; some others refuse to let you upsize.
Existing tires are plenty wide, and wider tires might flop side to side a bit more in handling. But would ride better and give more rim protection if you hit a big chuckhole. Also better curbing protection for your rim edges.
You would probably lose some acceleration and braking due to some additional tire weight and diameter, so think about what you're looking for with the switch. Bigger is usually more $$$ as well.

One concern is that Discount Tire usually lists the alternate sizes that will fit on certain vehicles (including upsizes on stock wheel diameter), and they don't list anything bigger for the Edge Sport with 22" wheels.
I'd probably split the diff and go with a 275/40x22 if it was me, but I have no idea what is available in any of these sizes, so that might be the reason you're proposing 285's. We got 19" of snow in Detroit last night, so I am liking narrower tires to get thru that.
Does anyone make a 265/45 tire? That would get you a bit taller without the width increase. Again, 265's are awfully wide tires as it is.
Good luck,
George
