Frame Paint

What would be the best paint to use on the frame for durability and rust prevention? My frame is in good shape, with just surface rust. Thanks.

First off you NEED to clean the rust off 1st.

Then you can use any chassis paint you want

Steve33444, did you use a primer or did you just paint the color straight on to the metal. Thank to everyone who replied. I have priced some of the rust encapsulators and they are proud of it!

The only way to get rid of rust is to sandblast, period. any other way you are just masking it And it will come back using a rust converter will last longer than anything short of blasting, then using a high solids paint Is best for frames

Just straight onto the metal With no primer

Exactly my point. 3 months is not enough time till tell anything. Especially since your truck has been parked.

Drive it a winter or 2 then get back to us on how well that rustolium is holding up

KBS Coatings makes some excellent products.
This is the simplest way: RustSeal - Rust Prevention - Stop Rust Paint and that's what I'd choose given your description.

You can go whole hog and do it right: All-In-One Chassis Paint Kit - KBS All-In-One Chassis Kit - Frame Painting Kit KBS Coatings Best for a full resto. Good bit more work than just spraying with Rustoleum, but if the factory had done this, you wouldn't have any rust.

Other folks like POR-15 www.por15.com/POR-15-Rust-Preventive-Coating_p_8.html, but I don't have any experience with their products.

There are also "rust converters" like
Amazon.com : CRC Rust Converter (1-Quart, 32fl Ounce) : Sports & Outdoors Amazon.com : CRC Rust Converter (1-Quart, 32fl Ounce) : Sports & Outdoors
but you'd better paint over it to seal it well. I think this is a water based latex product (sort of like house paint). Works pretty good, but think of it more like a primer for rusty metal. Definitely less work than the epoxy coatings like KBS. This is a good product to paint little bubbles of surface rust on the body if you don't want to do a proper grind and paint fix.

KBS also makes excellent products for fuel tank repair. I have the most experience with that for motorcycle tanks. Of course, replacement tanks for these trucks are too cheap to worry about fixing.

Before this turns unfriendly, Rustoleum is certainly a very viable and cheap option.

It is clearly not the best, but it's not bad. You need to keep an eye on it. If you looked closely even just once a year, and then wire brushed and resprayed any rust spots as they appear, your frame would probably last a thousand years.

I knew a guy who was 'preserving' his 1965 Ford Galaxy 500 using nothing more than gloss house paint, a roller, and a small brush. Did the car look great? Not at all, but it's probably a great, cancer-free restoration candidate if the guy still has the car.

Rustoleum will work excellently if you don't treat it like a one-shot and forget it deal.

Did not use this stuff on my CrewCab but my 67 F250 Build which its thread is here (Man I need to update that)https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...c-install.html

I will throw some pics up of the after shots of using this chassis kit. 2K Ceramic Chassis Black Satin & Epoxy Primer Kit - Urethane Coatings - Epoxy Paint Primer

Since my whole frame was down to bare metal and ZERO rust I am hopeful that this will keep the fram looking good. and since I Boxed the frame front to back I used this inside the frame

Eastwood Internal Frame Coating 14oz Aerosol

Now It has just been parked inside the garage and not put out on the road yet but it is some durable crap, I had to remake my motor mounts twice ( I can't make up my mind on what engine to run) and when grinding off the coating it is hard but not too hard to where it will easily chip.

That is my 2 cents worth

Tried plain black paint on mine after hosing down and it looked good until winter. About 2 months in there were spots everywhere, definitely not worth the time.
