High Idle while clutching
Hi all,
Have a 96 F150 5.0 5 spd. I notice when I push the clutch in that the RPMs seem to hold at about 1000-1100 rpm for a second, like some kind of "assist" for shifting, but it kind of annoys me, is this actually a "feature" or is something wrong? Any way to disable it?
Thanks!

I had a '91 6-cyl/5-speed that would hang RPM for a long time between gears. The thing that finally fixed it involved the throttle position sensor. The computer wanted a less than .85 volt input from the TPS in order or recognize "closed throttle". It was above that, so it thought it was "part throttle" all the time, and wouldn't drop RPM for 20 seconds or so.
Hope this helps.
Later,
Mike.

It ain't hard. Basically, you stick the multimeter probe (or a paperclip, if it fits better) into the back of the plug, along the wire until you touch the terminal. There are 3 wires on the TPS plug. They are ground, power, and signal. Signal will be 5 Volts, and the signal changes with throttle opening. So, probe the signal and ground with the engine off, key on. You'll want the closed throttle to be at about .75, and wide open throttle close to 5. The voltage should increase smoothly.
