49 F1 Instrument Cluster Info

Working on the wiring for this and there is a 1" square ceramic piece that I believe is the voltage reducer with wires from the ignition switch through the device and then to the lower left of the cluster. Currently this was laying on the inner ledge of the back of the dash and unsecured so it was obviously shorting out. Looks like it has a 7/16" threaded post with lock nut to attach to something so its secure. Any ideas on where this goes on a stock truck? I can secure it but prefer to put it where it belongs.

Dick I think we need more info. Sounds like its 12Vt so somebody put the
ceramic reducer there. There is much said about voltage reducers. However
back around 1960 my father put a 57 Ford gen & regulator 12vt neg grd,. in our F6 reversed the feed thru the ampmeter. no regulator. Till this day gauges
always worked on straight 12volts. So if vt. regulator is manditory, don't
you think my gauges would have fried 55 years ago????? Same thing with
6 volt heater many owners run 12 vts to a 6vt heater including me.
Or maybe I'm just lucky..

BJ, I've never talked to anyone who didn't use a voltage reducer but if it's work this long for it be OK to without. Hopefully others who gone without will chime in.

BTW, this is the type of reducer I've used:

It's not a stock item but the mounting point is the large threaded stud. You make a bracket behind the dash with a simple piece of sheet metal that is screwed to the bottom lip of the dash.

Thank you. Didn't realize it wasn't a stock item but your suggestion is what I had planned to do if I couldn't get an answer. Thanks again

Can you confirm the truck is now 12v? If it's a "stock truck" as stated, it would be 6v, and the reducer wouldn't be needed.
