Need help locating a flywheel for a 400
Hi,
Hoping someone might be able to help me out. I'm needing to replace the clutch in my 78 F250. It has a 400 in it and I'm wanting to replace the flywheel at the same time I do the clutch. Problem I'm having is locating a flywheel, I can only find the ring. Are any of the flywheels cross compatible from the other engine families? I don't know the condition of flywheel yet but I may just have to get it turned. How many times can a flywheel be turned until it needs replaced? If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Applications: 1977/79 F100/350 - 1978/82 Bronco - 1980/82 F150/350 & Econoline.
The 180 tooth ring gear is the same 351M/400, but 351M's use an 11" clutch.

They don't "turn" them .... or at least they used to not ..... they resurfaced them on a big horizontal turning stone just to put a cross hatch back in and eliminate any blue if present.

When these parts are turned, the blue spots disappear, but within a short time they reappear because once these parts are warped, they are warped for life.
2004/2008 F150's were very prone to "brake judder" which is caused by warped front brake rotors.
When this occurs and you step on the brake pedal, the steering wheel does the shimmy shake-shake.
I bought a new 2004 F150 Lariat Super Crew 2WD, the dealer replaced the rotors 5 times within two years. I had to be driven home in the dealers service vehicle, as the wait time was "all day."
But the 3rd time, the dealers vehicle (a 'beater' Ford Windstar) had broken down, so I was stuck there...but not for long.
Disgusted, I went next door to the Nissan dealer, bought a new Titan, then drove it thru the dealers service driveway, told the amazed service writer I was in no hurry to get the turd back.
I then sold the F150 to my nephew, warned him about the rotors, which he had to have replaced twice. Ford finally came out with a new rotor design which solved the problem.

I agree that almost always is the case with brake rotors that see so much heat and which live a life subjected to the heat cycles over and over.
A flywheel is less likely to see the same temps or to be heated near as hot as a rotor and it's not unusual to skim surface bluing off if present and with a little better clutch habits, not see it happen again.
I don't suggest a warped flywheel ever be re-used once discovered.
