What if i just ran the non-oil cooler hose from the radiator to tue water pump and just left the hose nipples of the oil cooler open to the air?

Sorry, not familiar with the internals of the oil cooler and common failure points...

I removed the cooler on my 460 because my F150 frame was not chamfered for it. I did a similar install to yours except I mounted the filter up behind the bumper to protect it. I used braided SS hoses from Summit.

My next door neighbor bought a '94 F150 for his daughter and it has the 351W. When he got the truck, the cooling system was rusted very badly, so I recommended we remove the cooler lest it fail. It's still sitting on my workbench. We just replaced his lower radiator hose with one for a 302.

Thanks to OP for bringing this up, hadn't heard about it before. I did confirm today my rig has one on it. I'll be removing it, just not sure on method yet.

1)The sandwich plate (part with 2 hose nipples) can be removed from the block. It has a metal tab to keep it from rotating. Bend it & unscrew.

2)The nipple that the filter screws onto can be removed with the appropriate size hex/allen wrench from the sandwich plate. Screw that back into block.

3) Use a standard non-oil cooler lower radiator hose.

4) You can now use full size filter, (Usually FL-1A)

Here's the sandwich plate being removed from my 5.8:

Here's the Transdapt dual setup I mounted on the framerail:

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the 87-91 trucks have a cooler but a different design?

Yes they did Brad. They had an air-cooled unit mounted on the driver's side of the core support.

If you can't, let me know. Lkq is having a 1/2 off sale in 3 weeks by me, they have a ton of 87-91 trucks, usually more than 92-97. I'm going anyway. All the items were light weight enough that shipping would be fairly cheap to PA. I'll also keep an eye out for that tailgate emblem you had been looking for.

The pain in the butt was the gasket for the oil cooler manifold. It wasn't the same as the old oil cooler i believe and not the same as an oil filter gasket.

Also I know at least some 85' and 86' Bullnose trucks got them. So that may help if the brick has been stripped down.

...but what if I unhooked the hoses and just left the cooler there? is there any problem with doing so?

Not really. Theoretically the sandwich plate could still rupture & blow the oil out rather than becoming contaminated with water . You still wind up using a 1/2 size filter.
