You will notice less clunk when running 4wd if you manually engage them at the hub first.
If I know conditions are gonna require 4wd, I manually engage them before I start my truck and the just bop in and out of 4wd as needed. During lousy winter conditions I leave them locked in till the roads clear up.
You don't have to manually lock them...but you should at least cycle them a couple times a year to keep them free.
