If you could live anywhere in the world...
#16
I've got an interesting situation. I've lived in Oregon my entire life. Recently I lost somebody very close to me. More and more I've decided that I don't like weather in Oregon, or the politics, or the taxes, and a lot of other things. I think I need to move. I have no reason I need to stay here.
I have rental income that I can live off of, so technically, I can live anywhere in the world. It's not a ton of money but it's enough to cover my basics. I want to buy some land (several acres) and build my own house. I want to go somewhere where the cost of living is low.
So the question is where do I go? If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why? I could literally just hop on a plane tomorrow and stay there. I have a close friend in Virginia that wants me to move there, but I've never even been out of the pacific time zone...

Most folks would LOVE a chance at living in Oregon............Real Oregon is found away from the Willamette valley, start looking closer to home.
I have seen folks move from "Boregon" and go to Cali and elsewhere........3 yrs later, they are back..........and saying "What the hell was I thinking".

Then again my stuff is all either old enough or heavy enough to be exempt from testing. My buddy says insurance rates are a lot cheaper there too.
As others have said...I understand nowhere is going to be perfect. I am concerned about the gun laws also, and Oregon is pretty good there. I always carry a concealed firearm and I won't move anywhere that would be an issue.

The Coast Guard and Navy have taken me all over the country and the world and I can say that there's nothing like America. Canada is a pretty damned close option if you can stand the taxes.
I've lived in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia since the early 80's. The Virginia coast gets to enjoy some of the mildest weather east of the Mississippi. The seven city metro area offers anything that you find in the country and in the city with just a short drive. The cost of living is reasonable.
Having said all that, I'm a native of mid coast Maine and I left at age 18 to enter the military. The cost of living is high, the state and local politics are jacked, the weather sucks and is fairly unpredictable but the people are the best. The environment is clean and pristine, the small towns and sidewalks roll up before 8pm and it's nice. Maine is where my heart is and I'd take all the bad to get the good.

As for the emissions, yeah, we do have to have our vehicles inspected every year, but there are ways around the emissions portion of it- some of them are even legal!

Alaska & Hawaii are very expensive to reside in...because darn near everything has to be shipped in.
Plus, unless you live near Ketchikan, you have almost 19 hours of daylight in AK during the summer. During the rest of the year, be prepared for lots of snow.
In May 2013, while visiting a pal of mine who lives in North Pole (which is close to Fairbanks), I asked him how do you sleep at night when it's daylight? He said...I close my eyes!
Arizona & Nevada are gun friendly, but AZ has smog inspections and both are hotter than hades during the summer.
Forget CA unless you like earthquakes, horrid traffic, liberal left wing "do-gooder" politicians, ridiculous gun laws, smog inspections, high taxes and 10 million or so illegals.
I've been to the Carolina's, VA & WV .. all are nice places to visit, but I'm unaware if these states have smog inspections, restricted gun laws and left wing do-gooders.
Florida and the Gulf coast are nice if you like humid weather and hurricanes.
UT is gun friendly, there are very few left wing do-gooders, but it's not friendly if you drink alcohol...as one group found out.
In 1985 the long time WACA (Winchester Arms Collectors Assn.) sponsored gun show that was held in Cody WY moved to SLC
Cody is rural, the club wanted to attract more potential members, but moving the show to the SLC convention center wasn't the answer.
Members discovered that due to the restricted liquor laws...they couldn't get a drink in hotels and restaurants unless they brought their own liquor and then bought a "set-up."
The gun show moved back to Cody the following year...and it's been held there every year since.

Texas has emission inspections but, not state wide. Only in the metro areas the EPA deems has excessive bad stuff in the air. The rest of the state is subjected to safety inspections...which I am OK with.
In addition, autos over 25 years old are not subjected to emissions testing. Just safety. My two muscle cars are exempt from emissions tests.
We are a gun friendly state and may soon have hand gun open carry.

I thought about that, I may just end up keeping my Oregon plates. Most other places have a large tax or fee to transfer my vehicles over if I keep them, not to mention the emissions crap. I will be able to keep an Oregon address, I may even keep a vehicle here for when I'm visiting.
Then again my stuff is all either old enough or heavy enough to be exempt from testing. My buddy says insurance rates are a lot cheaper there too.
Yeah, I'm not far from Portland. I absolutely love the summers here but the 9 months of clouds and drizzle is getting old. I've looked out towards eastern and southern Oregon where the land is a lot cheaper, but if I'm going to do that, I might as well go anywhere. I'm still going to have to come back to this area a lot, and whether it's a 6 hour drive or a 6 hour plane ride doesn't make a whole lot of difference.
As others have said...I understand nowhere is going to be perfect. I am concerned about the gun laws also, and Oregon is pretty good there. I always carry a concealed firearm and I won't move anywhere that would be an issue.

And if politics is a problem, rural Oregon has NOTHING to do politically with the Libs in the valley.
I have been other places, nothing beats here.

[HSIL7247] 2 Bedroom Pool Villa in Rawai, Newly Renovated
181k if the conversion calc is right.looks like some nice (still very modest) golden year living to me baby.
Rawai
Situated at the southernmost tip of the island, Rawai Beach is the home of the famous sea gypsies and some of the finest seafood restaurants on the island. The surrounding ocean and islands are great for snorkeling, fishing, boat tours and diving, the beach itself is not suitable for swimming due to its being tidal. However Naiharn beach one of best on the island is within 3 km of Rawai Beach road. Rawai has many great bars and spectacular views of the outlaying islands.

i dunno if this is where id pick (iv still got several working years to go) but.........it doesn't exactly turn me off thinking about it either.
good intensive to insure we keep packing them 401ks/ira's just as full as we can, while still working.

You bet sir. I grew up in Stockton but you knew that and my sister lives in Searsport near town. I have tons of family in Bucksport but with the Verso shutdown and pending sale, Bucksport has little to offer.
I have 11 more years till I can safely retire from the USPS and then I'll be 64. Some acreage, a small house perhaps even a double wide and a great Ford in the garage will suit me fine. As long as my freezers are full, the generator runs good and I have ample supply of heating fuel, oil, pellets and or wood, I'm good to go.

we're supposed to have the right to do that anywhere in America.unfortunately some police will just roll up on ya and execute you for exercising that right so i wouldn't recommend it lmao.what we have for paper saying we can do and what happens if were to try doing in the real world is often vastly different.the sad part is,as we know the cop doesn't automatically get indited and you don't automatically get a trail.you just get buried and he continues with his career.

Open carry activists here in Texas are showing up on any random street corner around the state with weapons in tow. LE comes around just to make sure every one stays on the up and up.
Personally, I think they are hurting their cause because they are scaring the bejesus out of all of the Yankees and Left coaters that have moved here.
There are two or three bills in the Texas Legislature to approve open carry as we speak.
