plan for DMV trip / truck tags
Hello, all!
New guy here! Just bought an F250, so I'm sure I will have tons of questions. I've already been gleaning some good info from these boards. But first, I need to get tags on the truck. Here are my thoughts - please let me know if I have anything incorrect or omitted. I'll be going to a "DMV Select" at my local county Treasurer's Office. The ladies there are fairly knowledgeable and very willing to help.
The first, intermediary step will be to transfer a set of "passenger vehicle" tags (I also sold a car this weekend) to the truck. I still have five months left on these tags; no sense leaving them on the table. I won't be doing anything, weight-wise, with the truck until spring other than shakedown, maintenance, etc.
Here are my thoughts, or things that I think are facts:
Question: Will having truck tags somehow open me up to more attention from Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (when empty or loaded)? I know it isn't a CMV, but it will have “truck tags”.
So, am I missing something? I can see how this would be a bigger deal if I had a higher value truck.
Thanks, all!
Chris

Here are my thoughts, or things that I think are facts:
- I can tag my vehicle at anything I want; registered weight does not have to match Ford GVWR.
- I don't want to play the "maybe I won't get caught when over 7500" game. Besides, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement works this area a bit; I almost think they train their new recruits here. So, in the spring I will bump up registered weight into truck tag category.
- Personal Property Tax. I will lose the tax relief, but this is a low-value truck and our tax rates are reasonable. I've already done some estimated math and know what to expect. Also, my county does not pro-rate; they bill on what you own on January 1. I bought this past weekend, so I am golden for 2015 and won’t get a bill until December 2016 for what I own Jan 1 2016.
- From what I see on the DMV website, the 7500 – 10000 tags cost less than “passenger truck under 7500” tags. $45.50 vs $51.75.
