When to replace fuel pump & best brand?

I have a 2001 Expedition with a 5.4 engine with 125,000 miles. It runs good but I am wondering how long the in tank electric fuel pump is expected to last. I am considering replacing it since it has 125,000 miles on it.

I am also wondering what brands of fuel pumps are recommended?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The lifespan of the fuel pump varies from 50K to 200K miles depending on how much fuel was kept in the tank and the ambient temperature of the fuel. The more full and cooler the tank was kept the longer the pump will last. The fuel acts as a heat sink allowing the pump to run cooler and wear less.

Thank You for responding. That is good information. I purchased vehicle used with 60,000 and I let the tank level go to no less than 1/4.

If I decide to replace it, any recommendations of brand to replace it with or is the OEM one the only one to go?

In my experience after market fuel pumps fail 5 times more often than OEM pumps do. I don't know why, other than to say the manufacturing specs could be more stringent for the OEM one. Of course the OEM one is generally 3 times more expensive.

I just replaced mine with one from O'Reilly auto parts. I have a 99 with the 5.4 182000 on her. I did mine cause it started to fail after running a little while. No probs with the new one

If you don't want to do it again, get OEM. For a pump this is one thing I would not "white box" it with and I white box almost everything.

That said, if its working fine, I'd keep rolling with it.

I have lifts and tools to but I'd rather not have it fall on me and be stranded somewhere. You will probably be good tho.

I replaced the sending unit in my 1998 Navigator in September with an Airtex and had to replace it in December due to the gas gauge not working. After 2nd install it is now working but it only been a month. Lifetime Warranty Yes, but I had to do the labor myself twice. Not sure if aftermarket is worth it, guess it depends on how long you plan to keep the truck...........................

With the trade/sale prices on the older expys and navis nowadays...I dunno about everyone else but Im going to keep up on the maintenance and see just how many miles it'll go. Hell, on the flipside I might try to find a lower mileage 03-06 Navi in a year or two precisely because they are so cheap and how long they last.

Yep, these motors will go 300k no problem with the right upkeep. Trans too. Witness all the Crown Vic taxis in NYC that routinely went over 300k miles with those maniac taxi drivers behind the wheel.
