Oil Leak at Base of Dipstick Tube/1989-460

Need some input here.

My 1989 shop manual does not show an o-ring at the base of the dipstick tube.

When I got the truck, there was silicone caulk around the front timing cover-to-oil-pan and around the entry of the dipstick tube into the oil pan.

Oil pan and timing cover are redone and repainted, but I haven't yet been able to get this last leak stopped yet.

The dipstick tube looks like there are two rings stamped into the metal that could retain an o-ring.

Oh, and Ford Parts said they don't show a number for it either.

There is a one post thread in the archives where the poster found an o-ring at Ford, apparently to solve a similar issue, and posted a part number.

Ford Parts said it was a good number and that you had to buy ten and the cost was pretty astounding.

Matched up an o-ring at NAPA, but I'm still leaking at the dipstick tube entry into the oil pan.

What's the deal?

On mine I stacked 2 O-rings on the tube and that stopped the leak.

Thanks

Did you have to use Ford O-rings, (the ones they apparently do not list)?

Thinking the O.E. rings may have a different O.D.

Scroll to the bottom of this page and under "similar threads" titled "460 oil pan dipstick leak fix" by "33homerdoodle" is a thread with a picture and part number.

I have a related thread in the 1987-96 forum.

I did get a response there that a new factory tube came with an o-ring, but even that was a question that Ford Parts couldn't answer.

I have an o-ring kit from harbor freight that has all different sizes in it, I just matched up the old one to 2 of those.

Need help

Hi I have a 95 f250 with 7.5l 460 I'm having oil blow out of top of dipstick or resivore cap. I replaced the PVC already thinking that's all it was. There's no oil coming out of the valve cover either. I'm stumped any help would be greatly appreciated

Too much crankcase pressure. Either your PCV is not working (you should pull it out of the grommet while the engine is running and make sure there is vacuum) or your engine is worn out with too much blow-by for the PCV to handle.

So would the blow-by be caused by a worn head. And I would probably have to do a compression test. Where would I connect to for that

You could connect to it at the service department of your local ford dealer. Otherwise most compression testers connect to the spark plug hole. Remove your PCV, check to see if it is plugged;
Yes = clean out/replace
No = you have a bigger problem like the aforementioned blow by.

Make sure you are not overfull on oil also, as this is nearly as bad as being too low.

Good point, being overfull on oil could also cause this condition.
