Well, there you go.

Can only think it must have been a vandalization then.

Make anyone really mad lately???

My DEF tank was contaminated at a dealership. When I went in to look at it the tank was already pulled. As a matter of fact I had no way to prove it was even my DEF tank that I was looking at.

Long story short, the dealership denied it and my insurance company paid the claim.

I got the results back from Black Stone Labs and here is their answer:

JOHN: Not much turned up in the spectral tes of the ylowish liqud tha separted out from this ample of
DEF, so the substance isn't engie oil, transmison fluid, or anything like tha -those fluids would have
more aditves. Based on the low spectral eadings, the physical propert is, and the flashpoint of 170°F, we
conclude tha the foreign substance is diesl fuel.

They are saying diesel fuel. Since that is the case I have a problem because if it were me that would mean that I had to put in a gallon or so then put the switch tank and put diesel in the diesel tank. That didn't happen. So now I really confused as to how it got there. I did get the locking door and my son came out in the biting cold and installed it last night. So I can keep a lock on the door.

How many miles were on it when you bought it? Seems to me that the only logical explanation was that the previous owner did it. I believe diesel will float on top of the DEF and not come into contact with the pump until the tank gets low. Perhaps it took a couple years to contact the pump and the bottom of the tank enough to cause a failure.

Just a guess though.

I didn't know that. When I bought it there was 9782 miles on the odometer. The date was 7/9/2013. Since I knew nothing about the DEF system, I waited until it told me I needed DEF fluid and went to the ford dealer and bought 5 gals. of DEF and put it in. I took 90% of the 5 gals. I did this an second time so whatever was in the tank when I bought it was gone. The present odometer reading is 39008. Now I only buy a 2 1/2 gal jug and put it in after it passes the 1/2 tank in the computer and you instructed me. lol

What's your thing here? Just curious. I don't really have a strategy, I just stop by the Pilot store every 4-5k miles and fill up. I'm open to changing that.
