White Smoke from Exhaust

Hi all;

I am new to FTE - hours worth. I have an issue with my 92 F350 5.8L dually truck.

History:

Last week I was going to work when the transmission stopped working - reved high while traveling and finally quit on my on the return trip to home had it towed to the house.

My neighbor came over to look at the truck - at my request since he works as an automechanic. I started the truck - have reverse but no forward gears and putting in 1.5 quarts of ATF (Type F - the red stuff). Tested no forward gears, still have reverse. After about 10 minutes the exhaust bellowed out cloud white smoke - filling the entire 2' exhaust pipe. We pulled the Tranny dipsitck - still red and no burnt smell. The exhausted smelled like burning ATF.

MY firend thinks I have broken the 1st gear band in the tranny, but still why all the white smoke.

Checked Radiator fluid - no loss; checked oil dip stick no loss.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am 50/50 from selling it. But I love my dually.

Thanks in advance.

If you have a c6 (no overdrive button) pull the vacuum line off the modulator and see if ATF runs out. It will be on the bottom pass side of the trans. Btw, your truck does not use type f

A bad modulator valve will let aTF be sucked into the vacuum line explaining the white smoke but not the slipping. If you have od you don't have a modulator.

Replace tbe modator. They have a colored stripe to indicate different calibrations
They also sell an axjustable one. Maybe someone else can tell you exactly how to repla e
it. Searching might turn up something.

So we've determined that your vacuum modulator was faulty and sucking ATF into your engine through the vacuum hose, so that needs to be replaced for sure. That being said, the modulator will not cause you to not have drive.

You say that you have reverse but no drive in any of the forward ranges (D,2,L)? And how are you checking the level? You should be warmed up and idling in park, on level ground to check the level properly.

It sounds like you have a problem with the forward clutch. You may have lost enough fluid to burn the forward clutches. Or perhaps blown out a seal for the piston, or overheated the transmission and warped the valve body to the point where it does not seal. There are many things that could have happened here, none of them good.

FYI: There is no 1st gear band on a C6. There is an "intermediate" band that is applied in 2nd gear only. All 3 forward speeds require the forward clutch to be on.

Thanks for the information. I was just repeating what my neighbor said - I personally do not know much about Transmissions. I called a local transmission shop they will be picking up the truck sometime today. I will update when I receive the "free" estimate for the repair. Decided it was just as expensive to repair as to replace the truck - maybe a little cheaper.

Thank you to all that have responded, wonderful to have so many "FORD" people around.

Update on my Transmission issue. Modulator is bad, so is the Throttle Sensor - truck at shop; first place wanted $3K on a reman tranny - way to expensive at present moment. It is in another trans shop - only $1.2K for rebuilding and installation of Throttle sensor. Hope to have truck back next week.
