4x4 isssues

Hi All, I'm trying to help a friend diagnose his 4x4 issue. We know its not a vaccuum issue because he tried manually turning the hubs on and still no 4x4. The 4x4 light does come on the dash when he puts it in 4 high though. My thoughts are either a fuse for the transfer case motor or maybe the transfer case motor itself. Anything else it could be? Any way to test the xfer case motor? Thanks

Are you able to manually rotate front driveshaft when 4x4 is engaged?

How do you know that there is "no 4x4" when you manually lock the hubs? How are you testing?

Agreed- you need to be absolutely certain that the transfercase isn't engaging, before singling it out as the culprit.
My truck is manual shift, but my daughter has an ESOF Ranger, and it acts up sometimes. I'm sure that the systems are similar. Saying that, there is more than a fuse and a motor in the system to check- it won't be that simple.

Sorry everyone, I wasn't getting an update about having new responses. I just talked to him again now and got more information. First instance was a couple of days ago while driving on snow packed roads, he noticed his rear ketp sliding around. I have pretty much the same truck. Mine did the same thing until i put it in 4x4, then it tracked strait and I experienced no rear slippage. This same day I asked him if his heater was blowing out the front vents and he said yes. After talking with him today, he said he put it in 4x4 to go through a mud puddle yesterday and he noticed 2 things. One, that the truck was bucking while in 4x4 and 2, that the heater was only blowing out the defrost. I'm going to help him track down the vaccuum issue and then I'll go out with him to do some testing. I'll keep you all posted.
