Backing up guarantees that you waste at least half your time. Turning around means that you can push snow going either way and might only waste 10-20% of your time. Also, with some snows, wind-rowing at high speed means that you throw the snow further, requiring fewer total passes.

I plow with a '91 International 4700 dump truck, with a Boss V-plow with extensions, 9'6" total, I think. Only 2WD for me, though.

I agree with TJC--if you're in a 4WD truck, 2WD most of the time, and only 4HI when you need it.

I only plow a couple medium length (300-400ft) gravel driveways and a small parking lot (barly big enough to turn around in). I've always used 4wd high with no problem. I also go easy, no ram jam. The above comments make good sense. I'll have to try 4 low if we get a big snow

Thanks for all the good info

2wd works great in flat parking lots where you can keep your speed up. But in tight driveways 4wd is a Must. And 4lo is easier on everything

I figure it depends what your plowing. For just personal drive way or clearing the road I live on its always four low. Started out with a 79 f250 super cab 400m granny low four speed. Had a floor mat covering the gigantic hole in the floor. Still never had a problem with heat or not beating able to move. Could push up the side of the hill in first just idling up it. Currently have a 93 f150 regular cab long bed 5.0 auto has a cap on it and a ton f old boat motors in the back. Has too small 225/70/15 studded snows that came off a Nissan but that's what dad said to do with them. Never had any issues with it. One of y buddies gives me ***** cuz it has an eight foot blade plus those tires it sits awful funny but it's just a yard truck. I'd definitely use four high if it was a contract and on public roads, pavement like parking lots, etc. Next year I'll be using my 94 f250 super cab long bed 7.3 idi auto. Looking for a turbo setup if anyone has one to btw. I'm hoping to buy a v plow once the seasons over. My dad has a 96 f150 super cab short bed 5.8 auto he just picked up, twin of mine but under a hundred forty on it and a lot cleaner was a California truck. He plans on putting his eight foot blade off the ninety three. Its a shame he can't find a cap for it.
