Thanks! Tap it in with a socket contacting the flat inner face between the lip and the outer edge? Looks easily damaged driving from that side, but I get why it goes that direction.

I usually try to find a socket or a piece of round stock that is close to the size of the OD and drive or press it in by the outside edge. You may deform it with a socket or tube driving from the inside of the flat.

I was thinking I'd be lucky to find something that contacted the outer edge and also fit the recess. I do have a lot of old junk around here and a chopsaw.

It's not like I've never installed an oil seal but the old one was in the other way and looked different in construction. And Bernette, I tested the seal on the shaft and it was a really nice fit. I agree it looks smaller in the photos, but looks right in person. Well I will put it together in the morning and continue my wait for a call from Minnesota that some truckers have loaded it up. Here is a photo from 13 months ago when the 2 ton was delivered from N. Dakota. I am like a junkie......

Can do. After breakfast. I wish I could weld sheet metal like you and some others here. Bernette you did an amazing job in a relatively short time on your truck last winter. You can bet I will keep you all informed with my story. I have had a lot more computer time since my open heart surgery and it's been non stop

Here's the pinion shaft. Looks like it was assembled in april '47. There are more hand written numbers scratched in before that. Like the guy was signing his work.
