Engine & Transmission Removal 1951 V8

I am ready to pull the engine and transmission out of my 1951 F1. I am planning on pulling the engine and transmission together.

Is there anything I should be aware of before I pull both out as one unit?

I have everything loose and disconnected, the radiator is out. I do not have the radiator mounting brace off. The hood is off.

I am just waiting the weather to break so I can get to it.

Thanks, Scott in Texas

Unbolt the fenders from the cowl/running boards (just a handful of bolts) and take the front clip off. Pulling the engine+ tranny will be a snap then.

Personally I wouldn't try pulling the trans with the engine unless you are using an A-frame type hoist, and have a lot of headroom (not in a garage). Which trans do you have? If it's the 4-sp, that is a lot of weight and at the extension you'll need to reach over the fenders, may exceed the limits of a cheap hoist.

Pulling the front clip would make it a snap, but that isn't as easy as it's made out to be if you have rusty bolts, and if you don't have 3 friends to lift it off and set it down gently. You can use a hoist but still, a lot of extra work IMO.

To get the lift needed for just the engine, I made a lifting plate that mounts on the intake surface of the block. Even so the engine is way up there for the pan to clear the upper grille. With a trans connected, I think you'd need someone to lift the back of the trans up to clear the fenders or you'd have the engine up in the rafters.

Pulling Engine and Transmission

Ross,
I have a 3 speed transmission and a good engine hoist similar to the one in your picture, mine may be bit more heavy duty. I also will be using a leveler with chains bolted to the head bolts or possibly to the intake bolts.

You'll want to hook up behind the carb for best balance with the trans.

I pulled my 51 with trans connected but I removed the whole front end first Ross is right you will have to have someone pick up the back of the trans. I did this with just me and one other guy. We didnt have to come real high but we also made the chain short and made lifting points kinda like ross but a little less intricate. We had a very high quality lift as well. I would for sure remove some panels first I was thankfully I had it was worth the effort. Bottom line is it can and has been done.

Did it with a loader. I removed the radiator first. Didn't see the need to fool with the fenders.

I removed my flathead 6 with the 4 speed trans together on my F2 with a hoist and chains hooked into the head bolts. I did have the front clip removed though as AXracer suggested.

A little FWIW if you're pulling the engine by yourself. Go slow and use bungee cords and or straps to guide the engine while pulling it and when re installing it. I've never pulled or installed an engine that did not want to swing, especially with a transmission attached.
