Thanks Wayne.

I'm not trying to eliminate all the air and noise leakage problems in my truck with this boot. Just the one.

I'm thinking I need to close up that one hole when I'm sealing the rest of the floor. Maybe a rubber floor mat will do that adequately.

But my wife just agreed to make a boot for Betsy, so I'll be sure to post pics of that when it's done.

Of course, I could always buy one of these from Amazon and be done with it.

The one I showed first from Summit is too big.

Or go to a junkyard and get a boot from a junker. I got these for my 70 F350 to go over my PTO and hoist lever from a JY. One came from a truck, one from a 4 speed Subaru.

Joe, here is a scan of the McMaster-Carr catalog. The one I'm thinking about using is 74405T82, the second one down under black nylon fill 5/16" thick. I'm also looking at the D profile brush holder 74405T98. Their phone # is; (404)346-7000 or www.mcmaster.com

Thanks I looked that up on their website. I haven't decided what to do yet.

Hmmm. I don't know how much flex that has. I wonder what the length of travel is for the lever in a Land Rover... My park brake lever moves quite a ways. Now I'm going to have to measure that length of travel... it's obviously more than the opening in the cover the higher up the lever you go.

They didn't tell me there would be math and geometry.

Joe, I looked at my cover after I posted the info on the brush material. I think I will have to make a brush holder, as the slot for the brake and hoist levers is too close to the edge of the top of the cover to make the McMaster-Carr brush holder work.

Only retired people have this much time on their hands to do all this work for a part that Henry Ford didn't think of.

I picked up a boot from Midwest Early Ford last summer for $5.00, they listed as EB-7000-B for 48-52 Emergency brake. They were the only one to list it. They show a drawing of it in their catalog, but no picture on the website.
After some research, I found that Mac's sells what appears to be the same thing as an emergency brake boot for Ford Model A 1932-36

The original "boot" was actually a block of foam rubber, like the pad that goes around the shift tower. It was 3/4" thick, 4 1/2" long, and 2" wide. It had radiused corners, like the hole in the cover. It had a slit around it's circumference, so half of it stayed below the cover, and half above. The hole in the center was 1" x 3/8", also with radiused corners. Real simple to make from material available at McMaster-Carr. M-H used these for their transfer case levers as well. They probably bought them from Ford.

Joe, Do you pull that up thru the hole in the cover with the square flange on the bottom side?

Mark, I can't remember how I did it. I have the rubber mat, I'll have to get back out in the barn and look to see if I put the square flange on top of the mat or under the mat.

Yep, I see that. Too bad the shipping cost more than the part.

I find that is often the case. I think it's intended to make you buy more on each order to justify the high cost of shipping.
