1996 f250 429 swap

Hi guys,
Need some advice as to what I'm getting into.. I currently have a 1996 f250 351w with e40d trans Dana 60 410 gears.
I have the chance to purchase a worked 429 said to have 500hp. Do not know what's done to it yet. Will end up getting a build sheet before purchasing. Anyway I was wondering how involved this swap will be. With doing some digging iv found a site called l & l products that sells a kit for all the mechanical things such as headers, remote oil filter, alternator mount, oil pan etc... I do plan on keeping this motor efi I just prefer fuel injection over carbs... I know since it is worked I cannot just get a diner 460 truck and swap everything over. I was looking into doing a holly efi management system? My only concern with that is how do I still use an auto trans? Or would going to a manual trans be the better route anyway? Just want to get a plan on how to go about this swap and leave minimal guess work when it comes time to do it. Any and all input is appreciated!

There's supposed to be a stand-alone controller for the E4OD. I've heard it cost around $1,000, but I don't know anything else about it.

Sorry, I can't be of any more help.

Thanks for your response I think I'm just going to go with a manual trans.

They are not $1000, but closer to $600.

US Shift Product Pricing

Swapping to a manual will cost you as well. A scattershield for that 500 horse motor is over $500, plus the cost of a trans like a T56 to handle the power. You can bolt up ZF, but those are not free either. Then there is the clutch, and the brake pedal to brake/clutch pedal swap.

And a manual trans will allow you to break things more easily too.

Adapting your trucks gauges might be doable, but I would not have a clue.

Others may chime in on that.

Yes I found the stand alone e40d controller for around 600. Does anyone have any experience with the holly efi systems? Or know of a possible write up of a swap similar to this? Thank you for the responses. They are helping a lot

Unless that 429 is a 351w based stroker it won't bolt to that motor so you would need a big block E4OD. The existing PCM could be used as a trans controller you just have to feed it a few signals from whatever engine control system you use so that it can give the trans appropriate control signals.

Yes I am aware I will be needing to buy a new e40d that will fit the motor. If I purchased a parts truck with a 460 would I be able to just transfer everything over pcm, bolt on accessories, harness gauges etc... I'm sure it would work if I were doing a stock 460 swap but beings I'm swapping in a built 429 would the pcm still be able to control the more powerful motor? I know with obd2 I could just have it tuned but I'm not sure with obd1 this would be the cheapest route not sure if it's possible thanks again guys your responses are much appreciated

I had a Holley Pro-Jection TBI on my Bronco. It didn't work out so well for me. There was a "dead spot" in the fuel delivery map that would completely shut down the engine briefly under relatively heavy throttle. I ended up switching back to a carb. But to be fair to Holley, I never gave them a chance to address it. They might have made it right, but I owned the system for several years before I ever fired it up, and then it was another few years before I was driving it enough to know it wasn't just that I didn't have it tuned right.

Hey guys I need more help on this build... Found out that the 429 is a 1968 block... I also found a 460 1994-96 f250 460 motor parts truck near by for a decent price... If I can use the parts trucks accessories (power steering, ac, alternator, etc) pcm and harness for the 429 motor it would be a huge save in price and would be much easier to do. My question is will this work. Will the accessories bolt on and the biggest thing is will the pcm support a built motor? Going with route would save me thousands of dollars and would be much easier than installing all stand alone systems. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advanced.

The later heads typically have different bolt holes so I'm not sure what will fit, but in theory it'll work.

The SD computer probably won't like a 500hp 429. You could use a computer from a MAF 5.8L with an E4OD to make the swap with all ford parts. Add injector bosses to a carb manifold and use the Edelbrock elbow to mount a 90mm throttle body.

The cam will have to be computer friendly too and for 500hp you'll likely have to upgrade to a 255lph pump.

There's also Megasquirt... DIY Autotune is the site to look at.

You might be able to glean some tech info regarding front accessory mounts etc, and more here:

460 Ford Forum

I doubt you can run a 500 horse motor with the pcm. What is on that motor for induction now?

You know stock EFI manifolds will not bolt up to stock non-EFI heads....
