why is hvac to bad in explorers

So I have a 2004 explorer that does not have the rear air and heat option. so just standard hvac control panel up front.

It has terrible heat, low blower volume an it does what I think some strange logic. when you have defrost on you cannot select a/c to dry the air. Is the ac on with defrost like all other ford products? or am I just nuts, it seems to not defrost windows worth a crap.

also when I select the dash air it blows out drivers vent ok, but the vent on the right upper above the stereo there is just a wisp of air coming out, full right dash vent is not much better.

floor works good.

I have verified this operation seems to be similar to other 04 explorers I have played around with. just seems like crappy design to me.

any info on this.

AC should run in several modes including defrost. Should blow out all vents good. Check that you have all speeds on fans.. I think it is common that FORDs don't have a lot of air flow... I like to say it has s low -low- med slow and med... Fans are not overly large or put out a good quantity of air. You have a LONG CAB so heat / air movement will be marginal........ There are several doors in the ducts that are vacuum controlled. you can select floor- vents - defrost... If you loose vacuum it auto goes to defrost. AC runs in that mode - look at your compressor. Heat is controlled by electric motor and "blend door" . It mixes hot and cool air to get what you want...... I have a 2010 EDGE and the heat is GREAT... Our F150 and EXP are just marginal , nothing to brag about.

Arrow Ford Climate Control

A problem I continue to find with the 02 and up Explorers with climate control is the arm breaking on the Panel Airflow Door it breaks where the Vacuum Motor attaches to it. The plastic seems to be in good shape and it breaks towards the close position (must have been something in the vent). With this not operating you loose much of your air pressure in the unit it goes to the point of least resistance, in normal operation it would be closed in Defrost with a broken arm anywhere. You can get to the panel door control Motor and arm some what easy. It is on the right center about 12" behind the Climate control operator panel. Remove the Climate control panel complete and the shroud around it. Then dump the glove box complete and look under the dash about 15" to the left of the glove box and you should see two vacuum motors (you may have to move other items) the lower motor has a long arm and controls the Floor Door. The upper motor controls the Panel air flow and has a much shorter arm than the floor door still somewhat long now check to see if the metal arm and plastic are really connected if not you have problems. At this time I have two that are broken if yours is and you find a quick fix let me know.
