1951 Ford Vanette (o)

New to this and any forum really. I Have a 1951 Ford vanette that has the 226 flat six. The truck jag been sitting in the middle of a field for 45 years. We changed it from 6 to 12 volt and cleaned out liquids and it actually started! It even had the same plugs from 45 years ago! Anyways it ran good for a while but one day I took it out for a stroll got to my destination perfectly, but it had a hard time starting again 30 minutes after I parked. . Idled ok but no power when I have it gas. Towed it home changed all plugs and is even harder to start. Points are all reset and coil new, cap seems great with no buildup. Spark is there but not sure it is fast enough. Anyone change this system to electronic ignition? Or any other ideas?

Welcome to the forum! Have you thoroughly checked out your fuel delivery system? Is your tank clean? Lines not clogged? Fuel filter and pump flowing good? Carb not plugged with crap or goo? If you've changed out all the electrical and it made no difference, it's time to look elsewhere, and the fuel delivery system is the next logical step. It can always be suspect in these old trucks, especially if they've been sitting awhile. You can loosen up the dried varnish and crap with the fresh gas and plug a filter or passage real easy.

I have to second what Wayne said, but if you decide you want to go to electronic ignition, here's what I did to my 49 F1 with the 226.

I'm not sure it will solve your current problem, but it's still a great upgrade!

Here, here on the fuel lines. If you haven't changed the plug wires and cleaned all the battery/ground connections, do that too. These are simple engines that will run with the original ignition systems.

Oh and welcome. Pics, please.

Normally a regulator such as a Holley 12-804, set at 2.5 psi, is used with an electric pump. If you have gas pouring down the throat of the carb, that's your clue. But the tank and lines still need to be clear for the pump to work. Add filters before and after the pump, too.

I had to look up a 'Vanette' to see what it looks like.

I think they were used as bread delivery trucks around the world?

Here is a photo I found, does yours look like this?

It is difficult to see how much gad is getting to it because the carburetor is upside down. It is on the bottom under the exhaust manifold. The had is siphoned? ? Kinda

To clear the floor on a Vanette they used an updraft carb and put the exhaust manifold above the intake. Fuel is still pumped to the carb, and it operates just like any other carb, it's just that airflow is up instead of down. I bet it's a treat to work on...

I see you're in NM, where exactly?

Truck pictured in post 7 is not a Vanette. The Vanette does not use a Ford grille or sheet metal, it's just a Ford "rolling chassis" with an aftermarket body mounted to it.

1951/52 = F3 Parcel Delivery.

Mine had the Vanette emblem under the Ford one in the front. .. Maybe it was put there afterwards?

If you post a picture of your truck we'll be able to nail it down.

Vanette is a commercial body company that added their bodies to the Ford cowl and frame. There were other similar companies that built their bodies onto the rolling frames purchased from Ford. This is similar to the current motor homes that are built by motorhome companies using rolling chassis purchased from the major auto makers.
