1980 F350 Engine Compatibility

I am wondering if a 400 engine out of a 1977 Thunderbird would fit into a 1980 F350 4X4 regular cab? The truck has a manual transmission. I am not sure what the truck had originally except that it was a V8. Thanks

It should fit. But you need to swap out all the oil pan and dipstick stuff. All these trucks were rear sump, most of the cars were front sump. All the oil pumps were in the front. So for the rear sump you need the long extension for the oil pump, usually there is a main bearing stud instead of a bolt that holds the extension, and you also need the proper dipstick tube and dipstick. Hopefully the rear sump pan that you have will have a hole for the dipstick tube. If it doesn't the dipstick needs to go in the side of the block. Sometimes there is a little plug in the side of the block you can take out and use for the dipstick, sometimes not.

You can take the old front dipstick tube and fold it over like a toothpaste tube to block it off.

I will admit i have never installed a car 400 into a truck that had a 400, but I have done a 351w and a 302, so I would think the formula would be the same. Check it out though.

8th digit of the vin should tell you what engine it had stock. Probably a 351m or 400. You'll need some truck parts, but the 400 should fit.

Depending on which V8 it had, you may need different "perches" - parts that are riveted and bolted to the crossmember and frame on which the motor mounts attach.

A 1980 350 4x4 would have had one of the 335 series engines.

460's were not found in manual trucks until 1983 and the advent of hydraulic clutches.
I don't believe either of the Windsor engines were installed in 350's during this era either.
Tell me again when the 351 H.O. came out?
It was to replace the M for 1984, correct?

Couldn't a 1980 have also had a 302?

It could of had a 300 6cyl which means a 302 or 351 Windsor would be a direct bolt in with engine perches

It could have, but I assume the OP still has the exhaust in the truck, or they wouldn't say it had a V8

The VIN, door tag or compliance sticker would tell exactly which displacement.
I'm going to assume 2 barrel 400.

Update

I now know the truck still has the 400 engine in it. I found the truck on craigslist and also found the 77 400 engine (38,000 miles)on craigslist- was checking here to see if it would all work before I decide to buy. So other than the oil pan/pump issues it should probably work I am guessing. Thanks very much for all of your answers.

If the engine is still in the truck, just swap the pan and pickup, and be on your way.
