Planning for a 5000+ mile road trip
My wife was diagnosed with Lung Cancer last september, and she will be done with her treatment next month.
She always talked about a vacation in Montana...Now I'm thinking about a 5000+ mile Round Trip for coming Year:
From Suffolk, VA - Mount Rushmore, SD - Glacier National Park, MT.
And I'm thinking to take our horse trailer with Living Quarters with us, so we have a place to live in on our trip.
this could be our last vacation together, because the survival rates for lung cancer is low.
We leave our horses home, maybe we take our 4Wheelers with us.

And I am farther north on not too far from I 81.
I take lots of long hauls so do this.
5K miles @ 7 mpgs X 4.00 for fuel. That means you will have a healthy fuel budget but should come in less.
X amount for enterainmnet, Fees
X amount to replenish supplies
Camera !
With Pilot/Flying J you can get an RV advantage card so you can pump first and get fuel discounts as well.

I was thinking this would be for us a 3-4 week road trip.
I checked some routes, And I think the route over I64 Louisville/St Louis - I70 Kansas City - 129 Omaha/ Sioux Falls - 190 towards Mount Rushmore will be better for us.
From there I need some more research what we like to see in Montana.

In 2013 we went I-80 to I-29 to I-90. I recommend avoiding I-80.
I-29 was a nice flat drive.
I-90 through SD can be a bit rough at times. The road had some major dips in places. Just be sure, if it says rough road or dips ahead, they MEAN IT.
We also went to Glacier. There are limited roads to get there, so be sure to check on construction and avoid it in advance if you can.
Have a great time. One to remember.

I agree with avoiding Interstate when possible. At least, out West. Somebody used to rate roadside Diners by the number of calendars on the wall. A good one was "a four calendar cafe." Well, ya just don't find those along the interstate. Big slabs of bacon longer than the plate, bright yellow yolk eggs, Idaho spuds w/onions and gravy..
Certain two lane routes were the main thoroughfare before the interstates, and today are often little used. They are plenty wide and graded properly so it's not a white knuckle experience. Lots of gift shops and museums and antiques, small town attractions, I don't know why everyone is in such a hurry sometimes at least on vacation.
