A few more 7.3 PSD questions

Hello again, everyone.

I had up a thread previously trying to determine the cause of the rough idle I had been having. I have new Valve Cover gaskets, and a new ICP, along with a CPS that's going to go in the glove box as a spare. I was wondering two last things-

I picked up 8 new glow plugs to swap in since I'm gonna have the covers pulled anyway. Should they be fitting loosely in the connectors to the gaskets? They aren't seeming to be in danger of just vibrating off, but they seem to be very loose. Is this normal?

Also, should I use RTV/liquid gasket on my valve covers, or could that interfere somehow with the electrical connections?

Thank you.

#1. What kind of gp's did you get.
The connector shouldn't be loose. You should have to give a light tug to get it off and no sealant or gasket maker on the valve over gaskets.

^^^ you shouldn't have to use sealant. If you read the gasket it should have "reusable gasket" printed on it so it's built to last.

I remember when I did my GPs I had a heck of a time taking off a few of the GP connectors.

I bought motorcraft plugs from a local store. Next question is should I use dialectric grease or anything on the connections, or would that benefit me at all?

Also, does the HPOP take the same oil as the engine, or should I be adding some sort of special lubricant to the reservoir?

I'm pretty new to the 7.3...

I bought my 7.3 in March so I'm pretty new also. I'm having a great time slowly but surely getting my truck in shape. This forum is full of information and when I have time I read through it. Just about everything I know about the 7.3, and I don't know much compared to most of the members here, came from the threads here.

The HPOP uses the same oil as the engine. It is supplied with oil from the engine's crankshaft driven oil pump. Anything we might put in the HPOP ends up back in the crankcase, so no special oils.

Hope I don't start something that I can't finish. I don't know if Lucas is the problem, but I do know that tests of various Diesel fuel additives show that Lucas Diesel fuel additive is worse than no additive at all as a fuel additive. Lucas motorcycle oil ends up at the bottom of motorcycle oil tests too. Don't know where that puts Lucas oil additive. My opinion on Lucas in general is that they spend huge amounts of money sponsoring racing, which is a very good thing for racing and it also sells Lucas products. But their ad budget dominates their expenses and not enough money goes into their products. Of course some people swear by Lucas, the above is just my opinion.

Did you use the same oil and same viscosity as always when you changed it? I think oil that is too thin doesn't work well with the injectors. You could try draining your oil into a clean bucket and adding new oil. If it still runs rough then Lucas isn't the problem and you can save the oil that's contaminated with Lucas additive for your next oil change.

Powerstokes are completely different motors with high pressure oil to run the injectors. If any foaming at all occurs then get that stuff out of the motor. If it has anti-foaming agents added, then I don't know.

I have not nor would I ever put any additive in my PSD.
I have no experience having thus additives but have always seen opinions against them in these engines . the viscosity is very important to make the injectors function correctly.Lucas oil additive makes the oil cling much more than normal oil.I would not want that knowing how these operate.that may not be your issue but if it were me I wouldn't want that variable involved in this equation.

Yeah, with these guys said. I would dump that oil ASAP and put a fresh oil change in there.

What these guys said. Definitely no Lucas additive in the oil. The Lucas makes the oil foam up and since the injectors run off of high pressure oil, the foaming causes the injectors to not work properly.
