We took this trip to Garden Grove...

And I picked up my first bumpside.

Solid most of the way around but with a huge sheet of bondo on the passenger door, but it came with another door though.

Old & New

All buttoned up and ready to go.

Here's your problem

At home and in place

Plans include some chassis mods and shortening the bed to a mid size (16" only), body work and a mild windsor based engine. Probably a 302 from a Mustang since they can be built up much cheaper than the FE in it.

I spied that too!... but I'm prolly gonna go with a roll pan. Also spied the DoD sticker and a pic of an CG(?) in the garage... are/were you crab or a sailor?

I understand a shortbed conversion would remove 16 inches from the front and four inches behind the wheel wells. So you're shooting for a mid-length bed?

68, I will. I'm undecided at this point. I was pretty sure I was going to run a roll pan though.

HIO, I was a sailor and am now a civil servant working for the Navy. I'm fortunate enough to have a pretty easy computer gig on Coronado. The photo is of the USS Leonard F Mason (DD 852), my dad was stationed aboard her from 1964-1967. Here's a neat memento, the crew got these when they pulled the Gemini VIII astronauts and capsule out of the pacific off of Okinawa. After they finished the offload in Oki, it was back off the coast of Viet Nam providing gunfire support.

That' an awesome momento. Definitely a collector's item.. plus ZIPPO is a tried and true US company with high quality products. Good to "meet" a fellow sailor. My brothers and I were all Navy. They retired as an E-6 and an E-9. Both are crabs out of Coronado and Pendleton. Collectively, they served on the Ranger (CVA), Midway (CV), Buchanan (DDG), Tarawa (LHA), and Peleliu (LHA), I hit my EAOS and cycled out as an E5 after six years. Good times! I was an AT2 with P-3 Orion squadrons and MH-53 minesweepers and only did sea time as a special 90-day detachment on the Tripoli (LPH).

Unless the engine is cooled by air, I do believe a radiator is in your future.

Since you're a P3 guy...

I see all sorts of stuff at NASNI coming in or going out of the NAVAIR depot.

I was a DP3 from 95-99. Commissioned the USS John C. Stennis CVN 74.

Does anyone make a good remanufactured engine anymore? I had pretty good luck with Napa's brand but haven't done an engine in anything within the last 10 years.

Our NAPA uses an Ironclad brand for rebuilt. That engine is manufactured by ATK in Dallas. They are the brand I am leaning towards for my long block, but I am useless as to quality of the engines. My local NAPA guy said of the five or so they sold this year, no complaints. Even one of this co-workers bought two of them. You can get the same engine through AdvancedAuto for a little less money.

Nice pic! I miss working on those birds... after a while it just became a big playground. We'd fire up the APU, turn on the ballgame, and troubleshoot. Ah, plankowner.... neat line on the brag sheet.

You're in SoCal and should have no problem in finding a quality engine shop down there. I'd be dangerous (in terms of HP n TQ) being that close to the southland. Turbohunter over in the Dentside forum should be able to provide some leads.

Here's a couple of SoCal sources:

Bill's Auto Repair in the city of Orange, Bill specializes in FoMoCo products.

Hemingway's Automotive Service in Santa Ana.

USS Midway (Edit: CV-41) was the first US carrier to have an armored flight deck, missed WWII by two months.

USS Iowa (BB-61) now located in Los Angeles Harbor (San Pedro) as a museum ship.

It's the only BB with a bathtub, installed and used by FDR when the Iowa took him to the Tehran Conference.

Because.. FDR?

I read when the Iowa was recommissioned in the 1980s the Navy looked at updating the analog (gears and levers really) computers for the firing tables on the 16 inch guns. They just decided to leave that well enough alone. They work great.

The USS Midway was CV-41.

CV-45 was the Valley Forge.

FDR was partial paralyzed do to contracting polio, couldn't stand up without heavy metal braces attached to his legs.

Then he had to grasp someone's arm to allow him to 'walk' by swinging his hips back and forth.

So, it would have been very difficult if not impossible...for him to take a shower...without assistance.

USS Iowa was decommissioned in 1990, spent about 11 years in Newport RI, then was towed in 2001 to Suisun Bay CA, where she and the other ships of the 'reserve fleet' were rusting away.

30 April 2012: The USS Iowa was donated to the Pacific Battleship Center, towed to a repair yard in Richmond CA, steam cleaned and repainted, then began her tow to LA Harbor.

After spending time off Catalina Island to have her hull scrubbed, Iowa arrived in LA Harbor on 6 June 2012 (D-Day, 6 June 1944...Allies invaded Hitler's Festung Europa).

btw: The 'do-gooder' "Bagdad-by-the Bay" politicians want all the ships of the reserve fleet removed, as they claim the lead paint that is chipping off is fouling the bay.
