Regens really smack the mpg in the face!

This was the first week I have driven my new truck...... I had to do a lot of driving this week also but it was good because I wanted to get some break in miles on the truck.

I have just under 1k miles on it and so far I love this thing!

My first tank the mpg was pretty sucky roughly 12 mpg mixed driving and it regen at 100 miles. The second tank was a pretty big jump almost 17 mpg and no regen. The 3rd tank it stayed at around 17 then it went into regen at 580 miles this was the second time and the mpg dropped 1 mpg.

The truck has seemed to level off at 15.5-16 mpg and i sit in a lot of traffic....... It went into regen again at 740 miles and again at 960 so it has seemed to lock itself in to regen every few hundred miles.

It seems like if this truck did not have this emission system the milage would be 1 mpg or better in the city. I have not had it out on the hwy for an extended drive yet but the short time I did the instant showed 19 mpg for about an hours worth of driving.

I have hand calculated all my tanks and so far the trucks computer is extremely close. I didn't buy this thing for mpg or economy but it's just a curiosity thing.

If it stays like this I will be very happy...... I am still anxious to tow with it!

Sounds pretty consistent with my findings as well... When I'm towing, it has not gone into regen..

Yeah that makes sense..... More heat generated during towing so less regens are needed

I went from Md to Co last summer without any regens (1700 miles). Same on the return.

This exhaust with the double walls holds the heat real good for passive regens.

It is good to know your trucks personality. This enables you to know when something is off a bit and you can stay ontop of issues.

Knowing loaded and unloaded mpgs is useful in trip/budget planning.

Mine is a CC Dually w/3.73 axle, towing my 5th wheel I get about 9.5-10.5mpg as long as I keep it under 65mph, over 65 it drops to about 8mpg, rarely regens. Coming home from TX to FL , not towing, 70-75mph, I was averaging 16.9mpg until regen started, by the time it was finished it was down to 15.2. My all around average not towing is 15.4..that's about a 1mpg improvement over my '09 6.4. I've got a friend that got a '13 with 3.55 axle and he's getting 18 (he says). But yes regen does have an adverse affect on mpg. It better than the old system on the 6.4's though! IMHO

Do the regens take a specific amount of time or do they vary from truck to truck?

I do pick up on a smell when my does regen...... It reminds of how E-85 smells being run through a gas engine. If I had to guess the few times my truck has gone into regen it seems about 10min

it goes until the DPF pressure is within clean range...
or (placed into park, or ..)
usually around 10-15 miles or so at highway speeds

Mine takes 6-8 miles on hwy. I've never timed it, just checked mileage. The smell is your exhaust, it get to +-1200° while in regen. If you park and shut it off while its still in regen, or shortly after its finished, your exhaust is still 800°-1000°. That's why ford tells you not to park in tall grass.

At highway speeds my truck regens for ~ 10 miles. You can watch your instant fuel economy screen to watch when the regen process is complete by the switch from ~ 12mpg to 19-20mpg.

Regens kill the mileage for sure. The good is when towing, your trailer, boat etc will not be covered in soot. They tow like a beast. I love it.

Yes, regen, towing, and wind resistance all severely effect fuel usage. Rarely do all 3 things work in your favor, but, there are times when they do. Cool dry air, tailwind, flat ground can make us giddy. Hot muggy air, headwinds will kill it though.

It's too hard to lay down specifics so I would get too bent on kibitzing about 1-2mpg.

I'm towing my fifth wheel camper for the first time with my 2015 and holy cow, this thing is a monster. It's a lot different than the 2011-14 engines, seems better, but not greatly, just a little nicer. The turbo is making me re learn several things.

With my camper I'm averaging 9.5-10.5. I'm in the smokey mountains driving speed limits.

Drove by guntersville lake and kept an eye out for ya Steve but didn't spy a white KR anywhere. I'm sitting at a KOA near Chattanooga tonight.

Lots of idling and sitting in traffic will greatly increase the need for regen cycles.

Trucks that idle all day long every day see DPF failures often.

In short... keep the idling to a minimum. The 6.7L does better when it's worked or it gets a lot of chances to stretch its legs.

yes the 6.0 is gone, 211,000 mi. trouble-free!

I had to take a road trip today, roughly 350 mi. round trip. Went into regen as I got onto the turnpike, on the way home went into regen again, thats 3 and I have just 500 mi. with almost 400 of those miles highway/cruise control. Coming home I towed an empty flatbed trailer.
I wasn't expecting so many regen events with my usage.
