Help needed identifying engine
Hi all, new to the world of ford trucks, just bought a 78 f100 lwb custom, its registered as a 3.5 but all the info i can find on the 78's says that they were fitted with a 3.9 or 4.9 straight 6. Can anyone help me identify it so i can go about ordering parts, as i am in the UK giving the registration to the parts shop don't work. Plans are to give it a good service, new wheels and tires and lower it, also gotta go through it and undo 25+ years of bodge jobs,
Cheers for any help guys

Can we assume the truck came from North America? As opposed to Argentina or Australia for example?
In N America in 1978, I think the only factory straight 6 offered in a F100,150,250 would have been the 300 cubic inch (4.9L) In the sixties and perhaps the early 70s there was a related 240 CI six, but by the late 70s I think if it were a 6, then it would be a 300.
The 4.9L 300 cid engine was used for a long time into the mid 90s. My dad had a 95 F150 with a fuel injected version of that motor. My 76 F100 had that motor originally before I began swapping V8's in.
Don't know what a 3.5 or 3.9 might be? There is a family of straight sixes that were in cars in the sixties and seventies that is a different family than the truck engines. I think they might have been 170's and 200's. These were found in things like Mustangs (base models) Mavericks, Fairmonts.
Post a picture. 3.5 or 3.9 doen't even sound familiar for V6 Ford engines. I had a 3.0L in a 92 Ford Ranger. I have two V6 Mustangs, an 01 with a 3.8L and a 06 with a 4.0L.
