351/400 serpentine water pump

So a few weeks ago I was online and came across this water pump, which I thought didn't exist, so I bought it right away so I would get one before they are gone. It's a reverse flow water pump. It says it's for a 302/351c. I did a little research and seems that the water pumps are interchangeable with 351m/400. We will see. I took a chance for $60.00 I have to decide which direction I'm going to go with my a/c compressor before I can go serpentine, but hopefully I'll have it done in the spring. Thought some of you would like to see some pictures. I found it on ebay. They have a few more.

Are you sure the ad wasn't a typo? I can understand 302/351W but not with a 351C.

The 351M/400 is the very close cousin of the 351C.. like Edelbrock's aluminum heads being spec'ed for both.

Just a clarification... is the water pump reverse flow or reverse rotation?

Reverse flow would route cool water to the heads first vs the standard setup which starts in the block and up to the heads. This has theoretical benefits but also problems in an engine not designed for it.

Reverse rotation would move the water in the normal way... by spinning the pump the opposite way. I think that is what you may want with a serpentine setup.

I'm with the other guys on this.........I think it was a typo, as a 302 is a completely different engine family than the 335 engine family. The pictures sure look like a 351C/351M/400 bolt pattern for a water pump, but I find it difficult to believe that it's a reverse rotation pump.

I've looked at serpentine setups for some time now, and if you go to the larger manufacturers, you'll notice they adapt their serpentine kits to account for the lack of a reverse rotation water pump. For example, if you go to Concept One, their serpentine kit uses two serpentine belts, so as to allow the water pump to still rotate in a clockwise direction. If you go to March Pulleys, their serpentine conversion kit has two redundant pulleys placed below the water pump pulley, so as to allow it to continue to rotate in a clockwise direction. So far, I haven't found any reverse rotation water pumps specifically for the 335 engine family, but it doesn't mean they don't exist.

If I had to guess, you either have a standard rotation pump for a 351C/351M/400, or you might have a reverse rotation pump for a 302/351W.......the pictures suggest the prior, but the advertisement wording suggests the latter.

Just my $0.02

sorry, it's reverse rotation, not reverse flow. It's an Aussie company, that's why it's 302/351c. So I'm thinking it fits, besides the parts interchange says: The 351C engine, introduced in 1970, was fitted with the D0AZ-8501-E water pump with a left-hand inlet, just like Boss 302, 302 and 351W engines from 1970 and up. The only real difference in these water pumps is flow rate. They are virtually interchangeable otherwise.
So based on that I figured it would bolt up. I don't have another 400 or 302 pump to compare it to at the moment. Actually I have a 5.0 laying in the mud out back i'll have to pull the pump off to compare to. They should be the same according to my research and infact if the research is correct I shouldn't have even bought this one and just used the one off the 5.0 But if it does look like it's going to work I'm going to run it with the minimum accessories to see if I have issues before I go through all the bs of fabbing up brackets just to find out the engine overheats. Here's the link: Ford 302 351C Cleveland High Volume Reverse Rotation Aluminum Water Pump Satin | eBay
I was so quick to order this because it was late at night and i was tired when i ordered it but that the major manufacturers use standard rotation pumps and there setup looks lame to me and defeats the purpose of going serpentine. I want one belt that self tentions.

FYI the add is for Aussie engines. When they started producing the Cleveland over there they used a de-stroked 351 so 302-351 is a true Cleveland motor, Boss 302s were really a 4 bolt small block with 4V Cleveland heads as a last minute fix for the 302 CanAm racing because the original tunnel port heads weren't working. The Boss 302 Mustang was produced to give the required factory production requirement, which is crazy as Ford never made a street 302 tunnel port engine. Go figure. I have a pump in the mail from StreetMaster for my 400M. 302 small block, Windsor, Boss 302s are different engines and the C/M engines have completely different cooling "plumbing" nothing really interchanges, head swaps have to be machined to fit by a machine shop.

^ No such thing as a 400M, it's just plain 'ol 400.

US/Canada: 351C/351M/400 water pump is not the same as 302 & 351W

351C = 1970/74 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars & Ranchero's only.

351M = 1975/79 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars & Ranchero's / 1977/79 F100/350 / 1978/82 Bronco / 1980/82 F150/350.

351W = 1969/79 Ranchero / 1969/89 FoMoCo Passenger Cars / 1975/96 Econoline / 1981/96 F150/350 & Bronco / 1997 F250/350 & E250/350.

400 = 1971/79 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars & Ranchero's / 1977/79 F100/350 / Some 1978 & all 1979 Lincoln/Continental Mark V / 1978/82 Bronco / 1980/82 F150/350.

Wrong. 400 Modified (lengthened deck height on 335 design series) was used sporadicly internally by Ford. Now there's no such thing as a 289/302 Windsor just sbf. 400 I have was cast at the Midland foundry, others were cast at Cleveland foundry and Detroit foundry, some 351Cs were cast at the Windsor foundry and it's true nobody really knows where the M moniker came from, but Ford used it on the 351s using the modified block were called 351M to differentiate it from the 351C, and the 351C was labeled to differentiate it from the 351W. Three engines with the same bore & stroke each with a different block all overlapping each other in production, now that's a better idea. Your turn.

The Ford 400 is not a modified engine. It is just a Ford 400. The 351M is a destroked 400. You could never order a 400M. Simply a 400

Where is the 400M? No see um.

Left: 1st page of 351M/400 parts list / Right: Scroll down to engine codes. S = 400 2V

Perhaps with your expansive 48 posts since 2011, you didn't notice that NumberDummy has nearly 58 thousand posts, or perhaps you didn't notice his "superb reputation on FTE", or more importantly, you didn't bother to notice in his postscript where it says "Retired Ford Parts Manager".

Bill (NumberDummy) has been here for years helping us with obscure information on our trucks and he does it because he has the knowledge, experience, and a helpful personality............he isn't required to do it, he does it because he CHOOSES to...........and for that, I, and many people here, are thankful.

So, I guess my advice is that you stop being butt hurt about being wrong, and perhaps speak to Bill, or anyone else here for that matter, with the respect that one gentleman gives another as a matter of course...........because at least in Bill's case....he's earned it.

I'm sure some moderator is going to now take away my birthday, lock the thread, or something, but it needed to be said. I'd prefer we get back onto whatever the heck that water pump is................in my limited research, I've found that there is what is basically an Australian 302C (destroked Australian 351C), so maybe that's what the advertisement was referring to in the first place. Bolt pattern still looks questionable to me, but it'd be interesting if there was a serpentine capable pump that could fit a 400 that didn't require the use of redundant pulleys, like those made by some of the serpentine kit manufacturers out there.
