Found in oil pan, what is it!!??

Took oil pans off a 2003 6.0l this morning to replace the upper pan gaskets, and I found this roller/pin in the oil pan. Went to my local Ford dealership, and they had no idea what it was from. I was hoping someone might know!!??

Any help would be great!!

Although I can't see the end it looks like a solid piece of metal with taped shoulders....like a dowel of some sort. How many miles on the engine you found it in and more importantly...How's it running?

If you could put an engine around it I bet the Ford guys could give you a part #

Only 1 end is tapered slightly, other end cut square.
It came in with power loss at highway speeds. Found HP oil losing pressure. Was diagnosing that problem when I found the oil leak at the pan gasket. After I drained 25 litrers of oil out of pan, I found fuel leaking from both cylinder heads. Truck has been running as smooth as a 6.0l runs until this point! I just don't want to forget about the pin, spend a bunch of money on it now to get it back together and find out the pin was important! 356000kms on engine. It has had both heads replaced and injectors done more than once in the past....

I'm not sure where it is from, but it is a dowel pin of some sort and definitely not a roll pin. But it does look very much like the dowel alignment pin from a timing chain sprocket on the cam. Not sure if the 6.0 has that design.

I think that may be something accidently picked up off the work bench when the heads were changed and maybe dropped into a oil drain gallery. Done that before only it was u-joint needle bearings.
I can think of nothing on a 6.0 that that size pin/dowel would fit except maybe the front cover dowels.
May also be the dowels for the LPOP stator.

I did the heads myself, i've never seen a pin like this before....
Would the front cover dowels be over an inch long?
Can I determine if they are without removing the LPOP or the front cover?

If you have a Ford dealer handy or a parts house with a real parts man you might take it to them and see if they recognise it.
Ask to see the replacement part of the suspect dowels and compare.

well, I think I found it!!! the upper oil pan has 2 alignment dowels....one of mine slid through the hole and into the oil pan. Possibly from vibration over time, or never been installed right.....
Thanks for all your replys !!

Cool if it doesn't seem to fit tight you may want clean it good with brake clean or similsr and coat with red locktite when you drive it in. Then let cure several hours. The hole has to be completely oil free or it won't cure right.

Is it 9 1/2 mm dia?

Lets hope not ...

Preferably it is 6 mm dia.

6 mm is the upper oil pan dowel

the 9 1/2 mm is in camshaft

Ouch didn't even think of that, but if it is the cam pin it shouldn't even run.
Ohh my but it doesn't run does it.

I would have to dig out some assembly diagrams.
But What about the front cover and oil pump cover.
Are they pined in place?

Cam pin should be easy to check with the engine out on a stand.
Flip it so you can shine a light in the sensor hole and turn crank
shaft over and you should see it somewhere in the 720º of rotation.
That is if you thinking the trigger pin. The gear pin might be harder.

One place that would be better to ask would be at an International
Service Shop. I know the mechanic at the one I get parts at is so
much more a mechanic that what you find at most dealerships.

Sorry guys but You can be a mechanic and work at a dealership but
you most likely will find yourself surrounded by simple tech want-to-be
that RTV things that they are too lazy to go to the parts counter and get
an O-ring for. (Yes I still want that guys head on a platter)
