Expedition Front End Grind

Hello all! I have a 2000 Expedition EB edition 4x4. It is equipped of course with the A4WD system that stays in auto as it's standard running position. I noticed when in any position, the front end produces a sharp grind if I hit the accelerator a bit hard from a dead stop (IE I can hold the break and give it a quick shot on the accelerator and produce the sound). This is the only time it produces the noise is when under a strain and it tends to wind up with the motor. I got lightly stuck once (when the whole thing came up) and shifted to 4x4 high and gave it a little gas and got the noise. It never happens after I am moving. I have not had anyone around to be able to help me listen to see if it is coming from a hub or not. In general the 4x4 works on ice as you can feel it gripping but I wonder if this is causing a lack of power at the front tires. Any advice would be awesome.

Is there any way for you to use a helper and try to narrow down where the noise is more concentrated?
