AOD to 5spd conversion 89 F150

Ok, haven't found any real info on my question.

When putting a 5spd in place of AOD, do you just slide the crossmember to make the mount line up.

There is almost 2" difference in placement of rear mount compared between the two. The frame does not have two sets of holes to move the crossmember. Is there a different crossmember? Do guys just drill the frame(not a problem).

I would have assumed Ford would have this pretty universal? I wonder if the frame rails were actually drilled for certain transmission, like the cab not having a cutout in the floor with the AOD?

I took the pedals from a '92, along with the floor cut out just in case.

I know on my '69 and 70 F100's, I just redrilled the frame when I swapped to stick shift. There again, did the factory have two different frame rails depending on final build?

The pedal assemblies for 87-91 and 92-96 are very different.
Not my pic, but...

the automagics had a different crossmember than manuals. ive cut a few of these trucks down, although it has been a while, but I remember them being different...to the point that I'd bet they were if I's a bettin man.

I'm not sure about the later versions but I'M pretty sure the Bricknose trucks have a removeable panel in the floor, I seem to remember seeing it under my AOD trucks. And +1 on the different trans crossmembers.

Ok, I know I got a '92 pedal assy. It does have the clutch slave mount built in like shown. I looked at my cab and it seems that it would work as my firewall has a plug in it that bolts through to the inside. I haven't gotten under the dash far enough to notice the upper area(around column) to compare the differences. I need to pull some plastic down.

Ok, at least we have a consensus that I need to find a 5spd crossmember. That is covered.

My '89 AOD truck does not have removable panel in floor. Not sure if it really needs cut out to get transmission in the truck? I have the panel from the 92 truck just in case. My cab has the outline area, but not cut out. Though the '92 truck had the proper flange area and such I don't think just cutting the floor will allow the panel to just sit in like the factory. Definitely a different stamping between the two floors, not just an afterthought cutout.

Man...I hate working on these newer trucks. My old bumps were so universal that everything fits everything. Pull the brake pedal pivot rod and slide the clutch pedal in. Presto you were ready to go.

I was hoping to do a quick weekend swap out this winter. Don't look promising. I have the transmission, though it is a '92 also(Not from same truck as pedals). It has no speedo provision so I'm doing the machine work to convert it. It was cheap enough and nice box so no big deal for me.

Have a friend that did a conversion like this, but he found another truck and swapped everything(including a fresh reman transmission). I wasn't lucky enough to find a truck so I'm piece mealing it.

What trans are you using? Guess it was right around the time they went to the vss for the speedo.

I've done an auto to manual conversions on an '89, the trans tunnel was identical to mine. I'd tape the shifter shut, install the trans, then use the shifter to locate your layout for cutting your tunnel.

Mazda 5spd, the trans has a '92 Ford tag on it. I didn't pay close enough attention when I bought it, but putting a hole in the tailhousing is no biggie when I work at a machine shop.

The pedals are my biggest "what if". Not sure if I can make the newer version fit? Nothing a saw and welder can't fix? Just don't have time to have it torn down currently. My AOD is starting to have bad days and hope it can make it another 4-5 months til I can get my summer rides out again.

Strange enough, those 87-91 pedals look more like mechanical linkage then hydraulic. Or did the master cylinder some how bolt on differently then 92-up? Guess I need to have buddy at part store pull this stuff up and see what is what.

Thanks for the heads up guys.
