Any 5.0 truck in good running condition on stock-ish sized tires should get 14 to 15mpg combined.
Any 5.8 truck in good running condition on stock-ish sized tires should get 13mpg combined.

If you never drive more than a few miles before stopping and shutting it down again or you do mostly stop and go city driving then your milage will be worse than average.

BigBlue.. those monster tires are killing it for you but have you recalibrated the speedo for them?

Sounds about right in my opinion, driving to work I seem to get about 14 if I stay out of it, fine by me considering my truck is paid in full and has tons of life left in it.

In my 89 F250 460 C6 3.55 gears I get 9mpg on a regular basis. 6 Litre tune-up made a big difference. I have got as good as 12mpg on longer trips, but I don't expect to get that very often!

See below for truck description:

60 MPH 80/100 percent highway: 18-20+ MPG

35-45 MPH 80 percent urban: 15-17 MPG

126K miles. All on synthetic oil. Original engine not rebuilt. Original clutch

We have I/M240 dyno emissions testing here in the Denver area and this truck has way lower emissions than the extreme low levels permitted for new 2014 cars ! Original catalyic converter.

1992 F-150, 4.9l/ 5 speed. RCLB, 2wd, 3.08 open diff.

15-16 in town, 19-ish highway and 17-18 combined.

With little to idling and using the 10% rule religioisly, add 1-2 mpg across the board.

Truck was last weighed in at 4,740lbs with me included.

Only mod is the timing bumped to 12° BTDC.

I have the same truck, but 4x4. Same gears, timing at 14 (I have to remember to bring it down to 12 this weekend because of winter gas and its slight ping on the highway), and an aluminum cap.

I'm averaging 17mpg, spending most of the time cruising 45 on backroads, with some light city. During the summer I'll average 19.

What is this 10 percent rule you speak of?

Using 10% of the throttle. Since the system uses info from the TPS Sensor to help calculate how much fuel to dump into the system.

Don't go over half throttle and you can see a significant mpg gain

This is way to true, keep your foot out of it when you are just driving to get somewhere and not to hot rod around and you can save a HUGE amount of fuel. I learned this trick a long time ago back when gas prices were still at a nice 3.15 a gallon.

On the 90 F150 I think the most I have seen is 17mpg but that is highway and that is pretty much all we drive other then backroads. It has stock 235 75 15 tires, and no mods. 3.55LS gears and E4OD with 302 drivetrain. Only problem with it is the muffler has a hole in it.

On the 89 F250 I think we see 10-12 on it. Running 4.10ls, ZF5, 351W, heavy flatbed. That is without a load. Usually with a load it gets 8mpg. Not sure what is causing it but haven't really looked into it much since it is a work truck and we have mom's car and my explorer for great gas mileage.

I don't normally involve myself in mileage claim threads, I cant stand the miracle claimers (not saying anyone who has posted is such, but if you aren't a miracle claimer then you know exactly what i'm talkin about). but, I've been killin it in the mileage department so I cant resist.

I used to have a 302, stock with long tubes and timing bumped. it was a sorry display of inefficiency. . .with 33's I could get 10.5 but normally saw 9-10. with 37's I couldn't hit 10mpg to save my life, and it was miserably slow.

ive been consistently averaging 12-12.5 with a 70/30 split of back roads (45 mphish average with some faster and slower spots) and highway. ill dip into the 11's if i'm hard on it more than a couple times on a tank. ill hit 13's if I hit the highway a little more and keep myself from peggin the speedo while im at it. I couldn't crest 10mpg with the same setup and the 302 of old.

I take it on ~150 mile one way trip a few times a year...I normally drive the whole way unabashed and I get 11.5-12 with 75-85 consistently and rippin up mountainsides no downshift. I took the trip at 65 the whole way (wasn't easy) just to see what it'd do....14.5 mpg. I did the same thing with the 302 once, except I did it at 55 instead of 65 because I was still gunnin it all the time with the 302 at any faster speed just to keep up. 11.5 with the 302 @ 55 for over two hours.

not too shabby at all, well exceeding my expectations after the 351 build. all this with 4.10's, heavy 37 military oz, zf5. I have a 3.55 speedo gear in the t case, and its almost dead on according to gps, friend pacing, and johnny law. the gearing is far from optimal, but its a blast to drive on the highway the way it is...I can peg the speedo and effortlessly sustain that speed and still be below 2500 rpm. also, im running 460 computer and 24 lb injectors to match....

I am, of course, cheating without the disclaimer. utilizing 93 octane with 10.5:1 compression ratio, so my cost per mile isn't much different than a less efficient setup. but give me power and efficiency all day long. I ported the **** out of the gt40p's, as well as the truck intake. it's a torque monster, barely touch the throttle even at speeds the 302 couldn't even send it (85 all day long). its actually fun to grandpa around when you have power....I hate what these engines are in stock trim.

love it. . .but now I want a 460....or boost.
